It’s had a long gestation period but it’s finally code complete and starting limited exposure as beta testing gets underway. It also has a new name. Starting with version 3.0 the plugin will be renamed Simple:Press Forum. This is to ensure it it not confused with the standalone commercial package of the same name.
The majority of feature requests - and there were far too many to include them all - have been put in place, especially those that were requested by many users. The list is long and this post will only touch the surface. So - roughly in order of demand:
- ‘Pretty/SEO’ Friendly Permalinks. And the good news - should also be able to display links with the old url structure.
- Private Messaging - the second most regular request.
- Powerful User Group and Permission structure. Fine control over who can see and do what.
- New ‘QuickLinks’ dropdown on the Search Bar displaying recent and unread posts
- Bulk Moderate Posts needing approval and read new posts in one place
- Login Form bought into current page view
- Mass Deletion tool for the removal of old topics
- Many ‘Custom’ options: Up to three custom icons in login bar; set custom icons for all Groups and Forums; Use a graphic in place of page title; Create a special ‘editor’ message
- Redirect RSS Feeds to external services (i.e., FeedBurner)
- ‘Pluggable’ page rendering code allowing replacement functions and custom code routines
- TinyMCE V3 with much improved text handling and formatting
- Optional Image File Uploading (only using TinyMCE editor)
- Improved Notification, Messaging and form validations
- EMail Overrides and create text of New User Email
- Democracy Polls plugin support
- Images as Thumbnails that expand
There is also a long list of smaller features and improvements that include: Increased use of Ajax - On-line Popup Help in all Admin Panels - First and Last Post entries link to their posts - New Members taken to Profile - Online/Offline Status displayed - Location and Registration date added to user profiles - Members can no longer post as Guests - Admin Tabs ’sticky’ after save - Improved Signature display - Check for Updates - Report suspect posts to Admin - Profanity Filter - New Install and Upgrade Procedure - New Template Tags (Statistics, recent Posts) - Options to colour alternate rows differently - Post Permalink popup - Admin Option to edit Time/Date stamp - many, many small bug fixes, cleanups and optimisations…
I am now using the first Beta of Version 3 at my support forum.
Just wanted to say that I’m very grateful for finding your site. I was looking for something else and stumbled upon the security vulnerability for simple forum (the other one).
On the website in question, I also saw a disclaimer that it was not about yours. I popped into both websites and fell in love with the plugin you’re providing. I’m glad I ran into it in the soon to be released Version 3 as well.
I’ve had a website up for 12 years or so and am turning it into a wordpress blog with my current pages in the background (and formatted as close to the new theme as possible).
Your Simple:Press should do exactly what I’m looking for, so I’m glad to be a part of your community and integrate it into my site
Thanks for the work you and your team are doing.
From the other side of the Atlantic (made in Canada eh!), Thanks again
Rob
Andy,
I was referred to your website by Alex Rabe at Boelinger.com. I installled it took my time to understand the install process, realised after the plugin upload and checking the page id and permalink, that the permalink on my blog had to be updated as a last step and then it worked perfectly.
I was wondering if it would be possible to shorten lengthy posts in the forum without interrupting my original blog post ? my real estate space is tight and in the forum I only wish to have a summary of the original post….
Thanks for your work and excellent plugin which has completed my SITE, I will donate once my cash flow is back again (12 months developing a business has hit me hard)
Thank You
James
This is a question for the forum really but as I am on this page…. setting the excerpt in the forum options should do this.
very good plugin but the urls are not seo friendly
Will the new version include the latest version of WP-Deadbolt?

Thanks,
Aaron
No it’s not going to be included. To be honest I find the forums implementation of the ’spam math’ on user registrations some 95% odd more effective.

This is great. I’ve been waiting for this release Andy! When will it be available for download?

Hey hey,
I didn’t receive the beta notification =(I thought you said you’ve added me to the list =)>. Anyway, please add me to the list for future testing… as I’ve said "I wanna be ta guinea piggy ma thingy =P.
@David: very soon I hope. We are trying t ensure that it also works out of the box with WPMU.
@MintTree: You are on the list - the beta is still not public yet. Slight delay…
Wow, that all sounds great. Especially the permalinks and the template tags, that’ll be nice. I just recently redesigned my entire blog including the entire Simple Forum, I mean Simple Press Forums, design. If anyone wants the template I made just let me know.
Here’s my new forums: http://www.counteragent.com/forums/
Guess I’m gonna have to fix’em up when the new version comes out of beta.
Boom!
First, I just want to say your software is perfect for integrating a simple forum into WordPress. Please continue to make it an effective yet streamlined package - with attention to security and usability, more than features. A lot of the additions you mention are great, but some seem like you are kinda taking this distribution from a Corvette to a Hummer. There are plenty of system heavy Internet bulletin packages out there - such as vBulletin - I don’t think we need to replicate another one of those.
For instance, I don’t want people sending PMs via Simple Forum. This is not something that supports the way I had originally planned to use the plugin. Since a lot of people want a PM system, can you allow some of us to not use it via admin control?
I haven’t activated the page that displays the Simple Forum plugin yet, but I have been tinkering around with it for weeks; read all your documentation. It’s rather quick, easy to manage, simple to understand, fully integrated into WordPress and easy to upgrade and patch. Great stuff!
Really looking forward to the new release of this excellent plugin.
Wow! Simple-press seems very nice project. Actually the only one very interesting forum for wordpress
I’ll wait for stable release
Hi,
Just wondering if there’s any news on a release date. Was just busy testing this on my local machine and decided to come check it out again…

Hi Andy,
(it is a modification of yours anyway)
First a thankyou, my users are happy with the forum on my site. I am finishing off css changes for our site forum, which I will send when complete. I keep finding bits I haven’t done
Inevitable question coming up, as I have looked at wp2.5 and really like it, I think it will suit my users better, will the new forum be compatible?
You probably aren’t sure yet as it’s still beta, but for once I am thinking of making the leap to a new version at release, before the first security update, as the back end seems to have improved a lot.
RR
Andy,
PLease ignore my last comment, I completely missed the release date and plays nicely bit, sorry.
