Current Version: 2.5.3
Released: 2nd April 2008
WordPress: Version 2.5 ONLY

I have updated my Admin Drop Down Menus plugin for WordPress 2.5. This does everything previous versions did except now they blend with the 2.5 colour scheme and, for the first time, I have made them ‘click’ menus just like proper PC and Mac menus.
Please do NOT try using this on any version of WP prior to 2.5. For those versions, use the one below.
[Updates]
2.5.1 added the Dashboard back into the menu.
2.5.2 sorted the Uploader menu bug! A couple of bits of an oversight on my part there!)
2.5.3 adds ‘right to left’ language support thanks to Hannit Cohen who kindly supplied the extra code and the RTL CSS file. Much appreciated it is too.

Current Version: 2.2.1
Released: 12th July 2007
WordPress: Versions 2.1 and 2.2

One of the biggest gripes I have about the WordPress Admin interface is the menu. Most items are always two mouse clicks and two page loads away which takes time and uses up unnecessary bandwidth. Something had to be done!

This plugin creates proper drop down menus for the WordPress admin pages. It uses a Javascript created menu which has faster rendering with very little overhead once loaded. One click and you are there!

This latest version makes it easy for the user to replace the supplied icons with their own and also allows you to supply specific icons for plugins. In fact, it makes it possible for a plugin author to supply a default icon with their package (as I have with my Popup Image Gallery and Simple Forum plugins)

Special thanks go to: Admin Menu Drop Down Plugin from Ozh whose code I initially based early versions on although it has changed quite a lot since then - and to The Silk Icons from Mark James

Wow. That is super nifty and useful. Thanks !

    Hi,

    Not working here: Screen Shot

As you can see, there are zero admin menus. All I did was upload the plug-in and enabled it after reading the readme so I don’t see how I did anything wrong.

I am running WP 2.0.5 and have tried this using FF 2.0, IE 6 SP2, IE 7, and Opera 9.1 beta… Same result in all…. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Will

  3. on 20 Nov 2006 at 11:30 amAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

    Morning Will
You should have absolutely no problem with Firefox. So - the obvious two questions are: (1) Do you have javascript enabled? (2) Did you put the menu ‘folder’ into the ‘plugns’ folder?
The second question might sound almost insulting but it has happened that one or two people have put the individual files into the plugins folder! The first question is a necessity.
if ineither of these two are the problem then it’s most likely a clash with another plugin - which has also hapened before. To deal with that problem I’d need to know what other plugins you have installed so that I can download them and try them here on my test system - which I am happy to do.

  4. on 22 Nov 2006 at 4:41 amWill

    Hi,

Yes javascript is enabled and yes I placed the entire folder in the plug-in folder just like your readme says to do.

Um cant be another plug-in since I get the same result when this plug-in is the only one installed.

    Thanks again,

    Will

  5. on 22 Nov 2006 at 11:18 amben

same here, when i install the plugin the whole menu disapears totally.

  6. on 22 Nov 2006 at 12:12 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

I’d very much like to get to the bottom of this! It works by replacing the html of the standard menu when the page is loaded. My guess is that it is something to do with the JS engine used by your browser. Can you tell me what browser, what version and what OS you are using?

Also - can you tell me if the ‘native CSS’ version of the drop down menus works for you or not?

  7. on 22 Nov 2006 at 12:13 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

Hi again Will. Thanks for the info. Please see my comments to ben above. Any information on browser version and OS would be welcomed. It has been fine on all the combinations I have here but I don’t have them all! I’m looking for a common thread.

  8. on 23 Nov 2006 at 4:07 amWill

I am using Windows XP SP2.

I get the same result using IE 6, IE 7, Opera 9.1, and Fire Fox 2.0.

I am not sure what you mean by “native CSS”. Just upload the four css files as found in the other plug-in seems to have no effect. If that is what you meant by trying it?

But yes by adding the css as found in the original wp-admin.css to chromestyle.css does bring the menus back.

But of course it is not usable like it should be.

Here is what it looks like:

    http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/5385/wtfcl4.jpg

I’ve moused over options so that is why its visible and there is no drop down menu either.

  9. on 23 Nov 2006 at 11:26 amAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

No I didn’t mean that. I meant using one of the other ‘menu’ plugins instead of this one.
But I am somewhat perplexed as I have no problem whatsoever with XP(2) or any of these browsers. Even works with Netscape!

  10. on 23 Nov 2006 at 8:18 pmWill

Well, in that case, no that version does not work at all.

    Cpanel reports:

[Thu Nov 23 14:16:18 2006] [error] PHP Fatal error: Cannot redeclare aws_header() in /public_html/wp-content/plugins/admindropmenus/adminmenus.php on line 21

  11. on 23 Nov 2006 at 8:47 pmWill

Whoops, forgot to disable the other one first…

Ok so not it does not work correctly either. At least the menu is there… But its still not drop down like it should be…

and of course js is enabled…

  12. on 23 Nov 2006 at 8:54 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

To be honest I’m out of ideas! if the ‘regular’ CSS-driven version doesn’t work either then it’s usually down to javascript or another plugin causing a clash. We’ve eliminated both of these as you said it failed when it was the only plugin. I’d love to solve this but on the basis that it works OK with your OS/Browser etc., with other users I’m not sure where else to look.

One question I did have though. The two JPEG’s you put up both show a non-standard dashboard. Is this a plugin or is there other coding been done that causes this? in other words, are all the correct hooks in place that should be there for a standard WP installation?

  13. on 23 Nov 2006 at 11:48 pmben

i’m using the most up-to-date version of firefox (cant remember which subversion but its firefox 2) and have also tried it on several versions of IE. Your other admin drop menu’s all work fine on several different installations (all with different combinations of plugins) so this is starting to become a total mystery!

I switched back to my own customised version of your native menu and everything is back to normal.

I was thinking it would be good if the mini icon images were set as bg-images in the css rather than inline images. You could somehow use each menu item label as a class name for each of the li’s, that way - each new menu item (other than the core ones) could have a customised icon next to it.

just a thought. Kudos for the plugin, it saves us countless pointless clicks.

  14. on 24 Nov 2006 at 12:25 amAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

You and Will are the only two failures reported to me (so far anyway!) and I am as mystified as you. I plan to take another close look at the JS to see if I can find anything I might have missed. It’s even weirder because in Will’s case he can’t get the native drop down menus to work either which is why I am tempted to think he has some local twist I can’t cater for.

Out of interest, do you run any plugins that might alter the admin html at run time?

The main problem with using background images for the menus is that everyones are different depending on what plugins they use - unless, of course, you stick with the standard ‘plugin’ image for everything other than core. I did toy with the idea of letting people choose their own icons from a large set but it seemed like overkill for what is, basically, intended to save a bit of time and clicks of the mouse.

  15. on 27 Nov 2006 at 4:06 amWill

    Hey,

Yeah simple plug-in I made. But yeah I disabled it when I only had your plugin installed.

I don’t know then… oh well, I will look more into when I have time…

I do appreciate all the effort you put into helping me. Thanks!

Have a great weekend, whats left of it…

    Take Care,

    Will

Whoa! 2.1 version already out, I’m impressed! It’s working beautifully on my test site. Thanks so much!

  19. on 18 Jan 2007 at 5:38 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

Well it was the only way I could have it working on my own, local 2.1 test site :)
I don’t think I could work without it now!

  20. on 19 Jan 2007 at 7:29 pmZEGii

    Hey, Andy,
it don’t work there same as Will too,
but something must add is it broken in ” Dashboard ” only,
because i can find the js bar in other page of administration just like ” User / Profile “.

Here i am using GNU/Linux Ubuntu , and with greatful Firefox 1.5.0.9
Thats all, thank you very much for your plugin project. ^^

thanks! this will come on handy…

  22. on 27 Jan 2007 at 4:35 pmGray

request: could the top-most blue bar with the “sitename / view site / logout / profile” is redundant, add another button on your bar. the left-most “home” button doesn’t need a drop down. just a simple click will do. the last “wordpress” button image is a little low resolution… and below your bar another “thick blue line” still exists… from the original theme? i suggest these be removed, then this would be aesthetically 5-star!

  23. on 29 Jan 2007 at 4:21 amAaron

Andy, about the issues reported for some users… well, I had the same issues too. Then, I noticed that my ftp server was configured as “ascii upload”. When I changed to “auto”, the plugin worked wonderfully!

I wanted to share this and make a sugestion: put this advice in the Read-Me file - “upload files in auto mode”, or something.

Sorry for my bad, bad english, it gets worse whe I have to use technical terms… :(

And congrats for the awsome plugins! I intend to use the photo gallery plugin too, it seems fantastic! Thanks for your excellent job! :)

  26. on 13 Feb 2007 at 10:33 amAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

Good point. Thanks for the tip. I’d always recommend setting the ‘auto’ mode but I’ll work it in.

  27. on 14 Feb 2007 at 12:59 pmMC

I am using WPMU. Instead of your WPMU script, I installed this Admin ‘Advanced’ Drop Menus in my plugins folder. The script seems to work for WPMU too. Does it have anything that you know of that won’t work with WPMU? Because it seems to work fine for any blogs created and any users. I am just wondering that if this can actually work in WPMU, why do you have another plug-in that is specifically programmed for WPMU? By the way, thank you very much for the plug-in. It’s awesome! I hope to hear from you soon.

  28. on 14 Feb 2007 at 1:28 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

The difference is that with the WPMU version the plugin is available to ALL users. With the standalone one it is only available to you. I think. At least that is how it seemed to work when I first tested things with the first WPMU user who asked for it.

  29. on 14 Feb 2007 at 1:47 pmMC

I tried it with my WPMU and it seems to work with not only me, but also to ALL other users. Interesting…

  30. on 14 Feb 2007 at 3:13 pmMC

Now I understand what you mean. I tested it, any new blogs created after I activated the plugin will not have the drop-down menu. I wish to use your plug-in in WPMU. However, I would like to have the design of Admin ‘Advanced’. And I would like it to work in Netscape. Is there a way that I can do that?

  31. on 14 Feb 2007 at 3:54 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

If I recall correctly, and I’m sorry but I just don’t have the time to look closely at the moment - the difference is more in the placement of the files than the code. I don’t think there was much to do - just change the path defined at the top of the php file I believe. Later I may be able to look but I am a bit rushed at the moment

  32. on 14 Feb 2007 at 5:43 pmMC

I figured it out, and it works now. Thank you so much! This plug-in is so awesome!
I have a question on the Notification plug-in page. If you can help me on that too, I’d very much appreciate it.

    Thank you.

  33. on 14 Feb 2007 at 8:17 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

Good to hear. I’ve sent you an email on the other plugin

Just installed your plugin Admin Advanced Interface - and want to thank you. That’s such a boost to my handling times. Thank you!

  36. on 23 Feb 2007 at 11:26 pmaza

Hi, very nice plugin - the best looking WP admin menu.
One small correction: on line 65 of aamenus.php instead of get_settings(’siteurl’) that is deprecated and also points to the WP installation directory not the home page, better use get_bloginfo(’url’) that points to the home page.

  37. on 23 Feb 2007 at 11:29 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

    I tend to use get_option(’home’) now…

  38. on 23 Feb 2007 at 11:51 pmm.e

great stuff - unfortunately there’s a problem with subscribe2comments, the menu disppears on its pages.

  39. on 24 Feb 2007 at 1:35 amAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

Yes - I have discovered this myself quite recently - and now had the opportunity to look. I’m not sure why Mark has done this but he forces the WordPress footer not to load and my menu plugin loads in the footer - and that’s why it’s missing.

  40. on 25 Feb 2007 at 1:51 amMichael Polsinelli

anyone know of a way to get a dropdown menu for my website?

    http://www.spinalalignment.com

it seems that it would be similar to this plugin.

  41. on 25 Feb 2007 at 2:10 amAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

There is a plugin out there and I’ve seen the damn thing but I’ve just spent 20 minutes searching to no avail…

  42. on 02 Mar 2007 at 4:40 pmJenn

This is a great feature for the admin area. Thank you!

  43. on 02 Mar 2007 at 4:43 pmmarco

Great plug, just a hint concerning localization, maybe something to correct during a coming update. You hardcoded the titles of the ‘Write’ and ‘Manage’ tabs here:

    ...
// WP2.1 array correction due to the swap of manage/edit post/page at top level
    function aws_correct_core_menus()
    {
    global $menu;

    // make some corrections
    $menu[5][0] = “Write”;
    $menu[5][1] = “edit_posts”;
    $menu[5][2] = “post-new.php”;
    $menu[10][0] = “Manage”;
    $menu[10][1] = “edit_posts”;
    $menu[10][2] = “edit.php”;

Unfortunately these cannot be overwritten via a localization file. I don’t know how to solve this problem, but at the moment it seems to be safe to just change those entries manually.

  44. on 02 Mar 2007 at 5:27 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

Good point. Will be corrected. But yes - you should be safe.

in reference to the menu completely disappearing problem…

this happens on my installation when i have the external links plugin activated.

everything works fine as expected when this plugin is deactivated.

hope this helps. love your plugins, keep up the good work.

  48. on 15 Mar 2007 at 5:43 amBrian

Looks like the PlugIn dropdown is fixed from earlier versions to have a “click” before all of the PlugIns drop down (for those who have a lot of plugins). You would also need to do the same for “options’ since many PlugIns mean many options. i can’t really use the menu until you can “click” on options to show options without them going past the bottom of the screen. Any way to fix this in the next release?

  49. on 15 Mar 2007 at 1:24 pmBen

first of all, i love the plugin. We have been using it (the css file) to style the entire administration interface, so that when the plugin is deactivated you have an ordinary looking backend, but once you turn it on the whole look changes.

I have made a slight modification to the plugin to generate a unique class on each drop-down item, so that we can set the icons as background images, rather than inline images. The drawback of this is that we have to make a new line in the css for every menu item telling it which icon to have. But the good thing is that its a lot easier to add your own custom icons to other plugins, rather than the default ‘jigsaw piece’ icon.

What we plan to do next is make the css dynamic so that every menu item will automatically have a line generated for it in the css with its corresponding icon.

It would be nice if (in the future) plugin writers could include a small 16×16 icon in their plugins zip package, which could be placed in the icons folder to be used as the icon for the plugins menu item.

Just some ideas. Keep up the great work

    thoughts?

Nice Plugin. I had another admin-css-menu-plugin, but this had a broken design because I have a large-menu-bar (because of a lot of plugins!)… but this advanced admin-menues-plugin works great for me. Thanks to the programmer. :-)

  55. on 30 Mar 2007 at 2:16 pmTomáš Kapler

not like it as standard version because of one small problem - that the top menu are then just hover, not links to default action, so i MUST follow the menu and use the second level, in your standard version i CAN, what is much better for me

  56. on 03 Apr 2007 at 11:03 pmDavid Precious

Great plugin, makes using the already nice WordPress admin interface even nicer.

    Good work.

(BTW, it’d be nice if your comment form let you know that it wouldn’t work with Javascript off, rather than letting you fill it all out, then finding out when you click the button and it does nothing :) )

  57. on 03 Apr 2007 at 11:12 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

Well I didn’t know that. And I’m not sure why it should fail either so I’ll look into it - thanks.

  61. on 29 Apr 2007 at 9:36 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

I think this might have been the fault of my download counter plugin. I was experimenting with some changes that are not quite right yet for about the last hour or so. I have now replaced it with the correct version and hopefully all should be back to normal. If not - send me an email (from the ‘About’ menu above) and I will send you a copy.

I wanted to let know though that while I was waiting for the chance to try this out I think I installed EVERY other drop menus. Your plugin is definitely the keeper ;) very impressed it is so pretty and not only that my friend can use it on every browser she has tried. I also have to mention for those visiting who read this that this set of menus seems to behave very gracefully with the addition of plugins and new top level menus being added. I hate to say it — but I liked your old design MUCH, MUCH, MUCH MORE!!! I thought you’d like to know. I’d recommend either going back to the old design or making a new one. This one is too jarring.

  69. on 13 Jul 2007 at 12:56 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

Do you mean the ‘native’ version?
I can see why it might be a preference in some ways but the problem with it is it is so top heavy what with the complete extra layer of CSS and everything.
Plus - there is the usual problem - and an even extra layer of CSS - just for IE6.
This version is much lighter and cleaner and works in all browsers.
Sorry to hear you don’t like it.

    Hi,

I’m only letting you know since I imagine that such information can help your blog. I suggest going to elance or Guru.com and finding someone who can make you a professional looking design. I just find this one with all the boxes and the shades of red, pink and gray unappealing and somewhat cheap looking (again, I’m only being so blunt as I know that a good looking design can be important). I imagine it shouldn’t be hard or expensive to get someone to create a really great looking design for you.

Either way, I love your plug-ins and wish you well with your site.

Hello Andy. This is a great plugin, thanks.

I found a little bug that happens in Dashboard page (where is no submenu items)…

    adminmenus.php:207:
    This line
    document.getElementById('submenu').innerHTML="<li>&nbsp;</li>";
    should be replace by…
    if(document.getElementById('submenu') || false) document.getElementById('submenu').innerHTML="<li>&nbsp;</li>";

  75. on 21 Jul 2007 at 2:29 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

Thanks for the tip. The file and code you mention isn’t actually a part of the ‘Advanced’ menu plugin (this page) but the standard ‘native’ one. I am curious as to the problem you were solving as I hadn’t heard of any problem around that.

Also worth noting that I am dropping this particular version as well from now on.

  76. on 22 Jul 2007 at 4:29 amLocoMark

Beautiful job, I love it. I was able to install without any issues.

By any chance, will there be a plug in for this comment you have where we can add a quote or boldface type or stuff on our site.

  77. on 22 Jul 2007 at 9:05 amMike

Hey. Thanks a ton for this plugin, I install it on every site I manage. When I run across a site that isn’t using the drop menus plugin, it just looks weird to me. ;)

Although I prefer the old, bluer style (it seemed to match WP better), this looks great, too. I’m not exactly sure how to phrase it, but both look well-designed and I’m sure I’ll adjust. I’m using this primarily for the functionality, anyway.

May I request that you fix the URL in the plugin file? You changed permalinks on your site, and it appears that you forgot to adjust what’s in the plugin file.

    Thanks again! :D

I did? I don’t see where? Can you give me some detail where you mean please?

  79. on 22 Jul 2007 at 12:06 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

It’s a plugin called ‘Comment Quicktags’ but I don’t think it is supported any more. I am probably about to lose it!

  80. on 22 Jul 2007 at 6:13 pmMike

Oh yeah, it’s when you’re viewing the plugin on your WordPress Plugins page. I open all of the homepages in tabs, when looking for plugin updates.

The URL needs to be fixed in this file: /advanced-admin-menus/aamenus.php, line 4.

It’s very minor, and as I found that I was fixing it myself, I figured I should mention it to you. Thanks! :D

  81. on 22 Jul 2007 at 9:32 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

Ah! Forgot that. Yes - I’ll put it right. Thanks for pointing this out.
I am in the middle of a complete overhaul of my site so it may well change again!

  82. on 22 Jul 2007 at 11:12 pmMike

Thank you, Andy! That really makes things easier.

Looking forward to the site overhaul. :)

I’ve just tried the Advance Admin Menu plugin. Immediately, I decide to intall the plugin on all wordpress sites I am managing.. Thanks a lot for your effort, it’s really useful. Well done. I love it a lot.

  84. on 05 Aug 2007 at 4:47 amSEO Blogger

Hi, just a minor suggestion for an improvement:

Well, this resulted from when I notice that I have to hover of "Write" tab (and other first level tabs) to be able to click on the "Write" link to get to the "Write Post" interface. So, basically, it would be efficient if the first level tab such as "Write" is directly link to the "Write Post" interface (without me having to hover over the tab to be able to click on the drop-down "Write" link.

Well, that"s all the suggested improvement I have so far for this "extremely" useful plugin =P.

    Thanks.

Using wpmu, 1.2.4, some submens, not all, show "image not found" ugly browser iconso I added an if no $icon condition then show the wp_plugin.png image:
    <code>if  (empty($icon)) {$mtype = "<img src="" . $ipath . "wp_plugin.png" height="16" width="16" alt=""/>&nbsp;";} </code>just before<code>$altmenu[$k]["sub"][$item[2]]["url"] = $link;</code>
    I love this plugin.

  86. on 10 Aug 2007 at 11:10 amAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

@dsader: Sorry - I just no longer really have the time to support multiple versions of this plugin so I dropped support for MU and concentrate on the core version. Glad you got it working as you want.

Menus plugin is great.  Saves a lot of time looking for things.  Similar to what is used and familiar from static sites.  Great Job.

I have to say thank you so much for the hard works !!!!!!!!!

and this thing should be included in the next release of the official WP package.

one thing tho bother me a bit, the second CSS file which intended to reserve orginal backend admin theme was not functioning right, I know this isn’t your problem, but I just wanna address it out.

and finally you should reward as yearly WP corrector/improver prize.
    lol

    cheers

  98. on 11 Sep 2007 at 2:49 pmAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

Can yiu tell me what’s wrong with the CSS file? I am using it locally (on one installation) and it seems OK…
And thanks for your positive comments!

  99. on 11 Sep 2007 at 2:59 pmAiron

    @Bryan Chan
"was not functioning right" is so vague … what is wrong exactly?

    Thanks

  100. on 12 Sep 2007 at 11:40 ambryan chan

    Hi Airon,
the original purpose of the second CSS was to inherit other backend’s theme, such as SpotMilk and etc, or at least match the color, and my problem is it does not do what it surposed to do.

by the way, I dont program, I am suck at it ;)

can you sent me a screenshot ??

  103. on 15 Sep 2007 at 9:21 amLes

Love it! I’d like to see this (or something very like it) as a core feature in WordPress - it would make the interface look a lot more "professional", which might be nice for new users…

  104. on 15 Sep 2007 at 10:27 amViper007Bond

    Works like a charm!

Unfortunately, it often actually causes more work for me because I have to hover and then mouse down to get to like the "Write Post" page. With the default screen, I can just click on "Write" and I’ll be at the page I want.

Simply put, it’d be really nice if the main menu bar was actually clickable and took you to the first item in the list.

    Thanks! :)

  105. on 15 Sep 2007 at 11:48 amAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

@Les: I agree. This plugin adds and extra level of processing and it would be so useful to have this in the core. I wouldn’t have to look after it then  either which would be a bonus!
@Viper. Can’t do it with the current code but I am on the lookout for a good alternative…

  106. on 15 Sep 2007 at 8:33 pmBraggus

    Thanx!

  107. on 16 Sep 2007 at 5:24 amBrian

Your plugin’s the shit - thanks for making it - new version works much better than old version (which version, I don’t know) - I previously had to uninstall the plugin because the mouseover menu reveal when you have a lot of tabs or multiple rows was a little screwy and made it hard to be able to click what you wanted - the newest verison locks into place much nicer and as an added bonus is attractive - very nice

  108. on 21 Sep 2007 at 6:25 pmRomanian Graffiti

I know some people said this before but I gotta say this myself, too, so you know the bug is still active. When a plugin is activated the menu just disappears … so this problem is still active and appears on /wp-admin/plugins.php?activate=true ;)

  109. on 22 Sep 2007 at 10:17 amAndy @ Yellow Swordfish

    @Romanian Graffiti
It has never happened to me and this plugin has hundreds of users to whom it doesn’t happen either. There is something installed on your system that is causing this,… there has always been the odd plugin which clashes.

  110. on 22 Sep 2007 at 12:56 pmRomanian Graffiti

I tested this thing on another blog I have. Plugin was activated and surprise … no problem with the menu. You were right. The problem appears only when I activate wp-autoblog on the 1st blog :)

Anyway Andy thanks for the quick reply.

    Cheers,
    Alex

When a plugin has a normal tab menu, Admin Dropdown Menu won’t display them.

    A non-display error (bug maybe?)
when I enter the manage menu of WP-Forum, only the first tab menu were shown. I figured out there must be sth missing for a forum plugin to have such tiny option menu.. so I deactivate the Admin Dropdown Menu, and there you go, all the tabs are back!

    HI!!
I really love this "MUST-HAVE" plugin!
I wonder if you can make a plugin to display top navigation menu with drop down effects, and maybe with some nice java effects too. (better with options in the admin side.)

I have search google…. and I just can’t believe my eyes! NO drop down menu navigation plugin!!!

Do you think it is hard to make such a useful plugin?

  116. on 04 Oct 2007 at 11:48 amBryan Chan

    Another displaying issue is found:
Whenever goto write a page, after you click publish,
the drop down menu is gone.

I think if this was a common problem nobody would be able to use the plugin! This is almost certainly going to be caused by a clash with another plugin although I have no idea which.

Just wanted to thank you for an amazing time-saver! I have recently been upgrading and tweaking my blog with new widgets and found the back-and-forth between the necessary interface pages took forever — with the drop-down menus it will be *so* much faster. I’m really looking forward to putting it through it’s paces when I continue to work in the admin section of my blog.

  122. on 03 Nov 2007 at 11:45 pmAlex

    Hey Andy,

first of all great plugin and timesaver. The only problem I have is that everytime I go to my widget page in the admin menu, the drop down menu disappears.

Do you know what can be the reason?

I’m using 2.3 but this happened in 2.2.3 too, the upgrade didn’t help, as I hoped to be :(

    I appreciate your help

I just had similar problems to those above: no menu whatsoever, even with all other plugins disabled. After a lot of experimentation, I found the problem. My blog’s title was: NSLog(@"Erik J. Barzeski");When I changed it to: NSLog(@’Erik J. Barzeski’);the menu re-appeared.That’s likely a bug that can/should be fixed.

    Andy,
This is a great time saver, I was constantly going back and forth between menus and now its just a single click instead of multiple. I am going to look in the support forum to see if there is an easy way to include more icons on the menu to replace all the wp_plugin.png menu icons.

"External Links to Download Files Not Permitted"

This is what I get when I try to download.  Yes, I’m downloading from your download page.  This isn’t the first site to do this to me, but I would really like it if you turned this off so I can try your plugin.

It’s best to put that kind of control in .htaccess anyway — less problematic, and fewer (if any) "false negatives".

Thank you very much for this plugin. Anyway I think it has a little design problem. Isn’t very clear where we are, if we are in a subcategory. There isn’t any highlight in the menu or something like that, in the theme by default is highlighted by blue button. Thank you  anyway. Regards, Roy

I know quite a lot are complaining about not supporting the second level menus.
    BUT.

This is such a great plugin I could not blog without it anymore.

So what I do, I turn it off, do my stuff on second level and reactivate.
Still…. Are you thinking (or is it possible…) of developing that aspect further? That would be brilliant (and would stop much of the clutter on this page).
Thank you once more. Please keep us informed.

    Greetings Andy,

We took the plunge and upgraded to WordPress 2.5rc1…

While the Admin Section has definitely  been upgraded we still won’t be able to do without your most excellent Admin Drop Down Menus Plug-in!!!

A commendation to your diligence in preparing your plug-ins before the WordPress upgrade is released.  We often wait for days, weeks, and sometimes forever before our favorite plug-ins (and themes) are updated…

I really like your new "click to activate" feature.  This keeps the menus from popping up while mousing around.

Thanks for all your work and support,

This plugin is definitely have to be included in default core wordpress, cause in my perspective as a user this plugin is "click saver" and cut the time to find what I need in the "menu"-ing applications…

very useful plugin indeed, thanks for making it… :)

    Humm…  Andy…
Thanks for the answer, but I am not a programmer …
I only set the WP and use the themes and plugins developed by those who do know them.
Then …   Here is a suggestion to you to adapt this excellent plugin, because many people (like me) use WP to develop sites (ex: http://www.PortaldosIngleses.com.br), which usually have many pages of content, and then I think a plugin for these pages would be accepted and used
    Thanks a lot!

Nice work on the updates… I just wish that the menus activated on hover rather than being clicked upon. It saves on time :D

  169. on 31 Mar 2008 at 1:51 amtrm96

Awesome! Like Vishwas said I too would like to see the menus activate upon hover… Great plugin though!

  170. on 31 Mar 2008 at 9:17 amYellow Swordfish

trm96 & Vishwas: For me, the hover became a bit of a nuisance to be honest - opening up whenever your mouse slipped north. And there is the plugin from Ozh that still uses hover and is good. It is not the way menus work in any desktop applications plus I wanted to move to using jQuery and rather liked the menu plugin. Sorry if you genuinely preferred the hover but I wont be going back to it I don’t think.

  171. on 31 Mar 2008 at 5:50 pmHarry

    Yes!! :)

Such a relief to see that this plugin made it into WP 2.5. It may be the only true must-have plugin for me. Certainly the only one I was worried I’d lose after the upgrade. Thanks for the hard work.

  172. on 31 Mar 2008 at 5:55 pmHarry

By the way, as a suggestion, I think it would be interesting if, when the menu only contains one choice (ie Dashboard and Comments), it would click through automatically instead of showing the menu with only the one option. In this aspect the plugin actually adds menu-time instead of eliminating it! Not a big deal though of course, it’s still great.

Perfect plugin to WordPress 2.5, congratulations, this is the best, the version 2.5.2 is very good, very better than default menu.

I have been using your drop down menu for a almost a year.

I prefer the color and the graphics of the previous version. I have reverted back to the previous version and its working with the WP 2.5, except I have duplicate settings, plugins and user buttons. And a few missing mini icons on submenu.
But I can live with it.

But I agree with everyone, this is a must-have plug-in for wordpress.

©hinaman » yes - the new colours and layout are not great are they. I am impressed you got the old working.. I didn’t get anythign at all when I first tried it!

I just activated the previous version, I think it is 2.2, and it worked.
I wouldn’t have been able to get it going otherwise.

But if the old color scheme could be incorporated into the 2.5 it would be great.

I am not an IT person, as you may have gathered.
I learn as I go along- just like solving a cryptic puzzle, looking for patterns.

    But I’ll have a go.
The WP 2.5 has so many CSS files under admin, it will be a mega challenge.
I like challenges. If I succeed, I’ll let you know.
    Thanks, and my regards

I liked it better when you didn’t have to click on the menus

Please, make an option for choosing to "click" or "mouse over" to show the menu.
I was used to just pass the mouse over it. :P
