Current Version: 1.1
Released: 27th December 2007
WordPress: Version 2.0 and above
This plugin is an advanced version of ‘Download Counter Lite’ which allows for most file types and also caters for organisation of a download library
The problem with my original plugin (now renamed Download Counter ‘Lite’) is that it would not handle media files or any type of file whose default behaviour was to open in the browser. This advanced version however resolves that. If you are only putting up simple files (like Zips) for download then the ‘Lite’ version may suffice. For anything more complex, this is the one.
This new advanced version also encourages and can make use of organisation in your download library as it allows for defining sub-folders that act as ‘categories’ giving more control.
Keep track of the number of downloads from your site. That’s all it does and does it simply. Keep a list of the downloadable files, replace the URL with the one the plugin gives you and, hopefully, sit back and watch the numbers rise!
Version 1.1
Version 1.1 corrects an annoying though harmless database error after the first file is added. It also adds a new option to disallow external sites from using download links from your site.
Please note that if you are currently using the older ‘Lite’ version then you do need to make some edits to your current data. This is not complicated but is required. The PDF guide that comes with this plugin explains what is needed,
Please Note:
I offer support for my plugins via the Support Forum only. I will NOT respond to support queries left in the comment section below and, in most cases, will also not publish them. Of course, if you’d like to say something nice or helpful, then feel free to leave a comment! I do prune them from time to time.
Zip-Archives downloaded with Internet Explorer 7 (7.0.5730.11) got destroyed. There is nothin in it than a file named like the zip itself.
No problems downloading the zip directly. Tested on several machines with different zips. No problems with Firefox.
But: A really great plugin. Who cares IE?
That’s strange. Nobody has mentioned having any problems with my plugin zip files sfter thay have been downloaded and I would suspect many of those people use IE7…
Yes, I think so, too. The zip-file I use your plugin for was downloaded more than 1000 times over the last 5 weeks. And nobody reports any trouble til yesterday. I tested it on three machines, all with xp and ie7. The zips got all corrupted. Direct download means no problems.
thank you for this plugin! i like this plugin because is not overloading the server so much like other similar plugins
Thanks for this usefull plugins
I believe rendzi’s users were using a download accelerator of some sorts, that can screw up downloads often..?! Either that or the server is moody. I have never had a problem like this myself, but it did happen that a video file would not download completely because of the server itself.
Andy, I feel stupid for not having gotten back to you in a while, I was promoted at work and I had to learn a complicated program and design a 48-page catalog from scratch so I got disorganised, but I’ll get back to you as soon as possible and test this wonderful gem, being the person who was nagging about the most of the features it has now. And nice to see it’s 2.3 compatible, as so many other plugins on the net aren’t.
@Iva: No problem at all. Hope it works for you! You need, perhaps, to fiddle with the ’speed’ value - notch it up a bit…
it is possible to display the amount of downloads in the post ?
Great Plugin!
A suggestion for the next version: the option to chose for every file to disallow or allow external links to download the file.
Would be very useful for me ;o)
thanks!
Claude
This plugin is fabulous, great works !
Another suggestion for the future : create a widget for the sidebar, with top ten (or more) downloads with counter and links for download them. And for each download, allow or disallow to appear in the top ten.
Thanks a lot ! Matthieu.
Hey Andy - have been using this plugin for a few weeks and works flawlessly. Love all your plugins! I have a big suggestion.
I know it would be a huge job but I’m going to say it anyway.
I would love to see your take on a shopping cart plugin.
I have a few good reasons for this. Warning, some of this is me bitching!
1. The only decent one has potential but it’s unbelievably buggy and the developer is hard to contact on top of having the worst instructions out there. e.g. they release RC updates all the time thinking it is something special some of which have forced me to uninstall etc, add more huffing and puffing here….
2. I know you could do a much better Job.
3. It would be great for business. I.e I would buy your plugin for sure.
4. I think a lot of other people would too.
5. Competition is always good for business. (actually is good for consumers)
My point is that it would be a lot of work but may be very profitable!
I can’t believe there is only really one out there.
Regardless I consider you to be easily one of the best plugin developers out there, plus your instructtions are great, and you use Apple!
Problems are firstly - I just don’t have the time… secondly - the minute you start charging people you are (a) running a business and (b) responsible!
That makes total sense. I guess I was blowing off some steam and also hoping that someone else would solve my problem for me!
In the developer community there are certainly those that do things in a professional way, and provide clear instructions therefore making it worth paying for.
p.s. what plugin do you use for this groovy editor on the comments box! Its great.
Cheese!
Get it here. It’s the same editor as the one WP provides - just cut down a little.
Thanks for this usefull plugins
