Current Version: 2.2
Released 18th April 2008
WordPress: Version 2.3 (and above) ONLY
Version 1.1 corrects a display issue with missing sub-pages - when not in the same category as their parent - and adds a new parameter to the template tag to enable page exclusions.
Version 2.0 Adds support for WordPress 2.5 and adds a facility to completely remove all page category assignments.
Version 2.1 corrects an archive display error in 2.5 and also adds classes and ids for styling.
Version 2.2 corrects display of sub-sub pages using the ‘current’ child directive.
This plugin replaces my old ‘Page Category Organiser’ plugin which will no longer be maintained following the release of WordPress version 2.3. If you consider moving from that plugin to this - or using this plugin for the first time - please read the following notes carefully - to ensure that what this plugin does is really what you want it to do!
What does it do?
Page Category Plus allows you to assign categories to WordPress ‘Pages’ - which WordPress in it’s natural state does not do. Unlike prior versions of the old ‘Page Category Organiser’, it uses the same categories you use for ‘Posts’ and, in effect, treats Pages as if they were Posts.
It has the following effect on your installation:
- It displays the categories list currently only available on the ‘Write > Post’ panel in the ‘Write > Page’ panel and allows category assignment as if the Page were a Post.
- It updates the Categories count when used on a Page just as happens on Posts.
- The built in ‘Archive’ view of ‘Posts by Category’ will include any ‘Pages’ that use that category.
- Template Tags - like wp_list_categories() - will include any categories used by Pages - even if that category is ONLY assigned to Pages.
All this means that using this plugin should not be undertaken lightly! But if you are one of the people who, for a long time, have wanted true categories attached to Pages and have wanted pages to appear in the same ‘flow’ as posts, then this should perform that trick.
In addition a template tag is included for creating a categorised page list and - for anyone using the old ‘Page Category Organiser’ plugin using page specific categories, there is an automatic update option to convert those categories to proper post categories.
Please Note:
I offer support for my plugins via the Support Forum only. I will NOT respond to support queries left in the comment section below and, in most cases, will also not publish them. Of course, if you’d like to say something nice or helpful, then feel free to leave a comment! I do prune them from time to time.
ill try to use it, thanks for the plug!!!
I’ve made a similar plugin, named ‘Category Page’, mainly focused on binding a page with a category, for example to use the page as an ‘introduction’ in your category archive.http://pixline.net/wordpress-plugins/category-page-plugin/It’s nice to see that the same problem had these two different setups and developments. If you don’t mind, I’d like to link to this plugin as soon as I update the main plugin page, as an alternative offered to its users. Good work!
No problem. I am about to look at yours to see if it is better for me than my own!
But yes - I am happy to accept and give you a link as well.
Correct me if i’m wrong, but doesn’t this clash with the idea of keeping posts and pages separate ? What is the point of having both pages and posts together why not just do all posts then and no pages.
Seems like keeping pages separate puts a clear distinciton on the site that this is a specific page of information where as a post is well just that a post, frequently updated yadi yadi. A site is suppose to have distinct pages from the blog type posts.
combining them could be confusing to a site visitor
@alias
It rather depends on your viewpoint. Many users of this (and the former) plugin are using their WP setup as a more general CMS. I have come across such sites that basically use no posts whatsever preferring to use the strengths that pages bring - like nesting. The only thing that pages do NOT bring is the organisation that categories confer.
@alias
It is actually very useful to be able to have pages assigned to categories - for example, on my club website it allows a fixed "intro" , followed by the relevant posts below.
Also, with some tweaking, you can make menus, submenus and even sub-sub-menus that automatically display the relevant page+posts.
To see this in use look at the club website http://www.budworthsc.org.uk.
I am sure this is only one example use of Page Categories.
OH…THANK YOU!!!!!
I have been beating my head against a wall trying to figure out how to get pages categorized then finally managed to enter the correct mix of search terms on the WP forum and found this plugin.
Despite what some may think, it is sometimes very necessary to categorize pages.
Thank you so much for this.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This plug in is exactly what I have been looking for. Being able to categorize the pages solves a huge issue for us. Thanks again!
I installed this and all my pages went out on my (rss2) feed. Rather embarrassing, actually.
Hi Andy
Thanks for this. I have customers who have asked about enhancing the page capabilities of WordPress - and this should address their needs. The fact that you can apply individual templates to pages, and that you can order them makes categorised pages a better option than posts for some sites - e.g. affiliate stores.
>> A site is suppose to have distinct pages from the blog type posts.
Not quite sure where and when this ‘rule’ was cast in stone.
This plugin enables web designers more freedom, and in some cases provides the ability to customise ‘WP as CMS’ into a more appropriate solution than the standard configuration.
Keep up the excellent work. I use a couple of your plugins, and hope you keep innovating and extending WordPress’s capabilities.
Thanks.
If you are using wp as a cms, categorizing pages and posts makes perfect sense. You have a post about "schwinn bicycles" and a page about "schwinn bicycles", it makes all the sense in the world for both to be in a category named "bicycles". I think that "you shouldn’t combine posts and pages" is not only a myth but is hurtful to site architecture and organization. Quality content that can help the user is no less or more useful if it is contained in a post or a page…. and if you aren’t showing all applicable and helpful content you are doing yourself and your visitors a disservice…. I’m surprised the functionality this plugin brings is not standard in WP, but suspect it will be in the future as wp transitions into a more cms based platform…. it’s a no brainer!
Absolutely love this plug-in. Thanks! We use it all the time, even though it takes some work to get it customized for each and every use
Excellent work !
I’m the new maintainer of a plugin & I’m doing my best to make it evolve : Category Icons. Not only it allows you to display icons next to your post titles, but also in front of your pages title, thanks to your plugin !
