Hi!
i’m using the Download Counter on my site and it works really good.
The only problem i have is that searchengines follow the download links and the Plugin is counting that. Is there any chance to avoid that?
I have read some stuff about rel="nofollow" but it seems like it’s not a good thing to use.
Any advice for me?
Thanks a lot!

In your case perhaps ‘nofollow’ would be a god idea on these links. Are you able to add it to the code and then see what effect it might have?

Hi!
yes, i can add it to the code! I’ve read that some search engines ignore rel="nofollow", but i’ll defiantly will give it a try!
Thanks a lot!

there is a plugin called Robots Meta
http://www.joostdevalk.nl/wordpress/robots-meta/
it allows you to configure no follow no archive robot commands on a per page basis,
if you no follow links on your entire site, you will never be indexed, however if you no follow only on the pages that have links you don’t want followed, then this is more like what you need.

That’s another approach and probably a better one for site-wide use. I think if we put this in the download plugin code though it will be restricted to download links only…

Hi!
i would want it for the downloads only and not for the pages. I’ll try it with no follow in the links now and maybe one day you’ll be in the mood to put it into the plugin!

Well it’s not so much being in the mood as knowing whether it has the desired effect. I, myself, have not noticed the problem in the first place.

i can’t explain it any other way then searchengines following the links.
for example i had 75 page views today, but over 400 downloads.
Any idea what else that could be?

The we best use a robots.txt file in the future. I can’t pre-supply that of course as it has to be your own site details but that will resolve it

Thanks for coming back. I’ll update the documentation withb the next update to include this as a recommendation. I can at least describe what needs to be done.
