I would like to know how to include a "download count" in my post, say, next to the link to the download file.

You use the directions that I wrote up in the read me file that you downloaded with the plugin.

If you drop down the information box in the tag line at the very bottom of this forum page you will see a link to the source of the tabbed interface (which I also use in  the forum admin). It is ver easy to setup and use.
