License Issue

I have an isse with the Licence of Simple::Press Forum:

It is required to leave The version/copryright strip in.

However, additional to it beeing ugly and hindering a neat integration into the website (in the worst case, the (c) could be interpreted to apply to the whole webpage instead of the Forum-Box), it features a non-free Popup-Javascript.

Since i'm I can't be 100% sure some evil Lawyer would define the website as being “commercial”, i'm not prepared to use non-free software in it… wich in turn means I have to either use some other forum software or just ignore the wish of the author to include that popup (wich would probably be safe I think because of the GPL) but I don't want to do that.

Perhaps you could consider changing that requirement to placing the a link to this website or something on a credits page for example.

What difference would placing the credits on a page make?

As to the 'non-free' element which requires a license for commercial site usage, this is set at $29. I would suggest that if you are not willing to part with $29 to use that then your site is almost certainly not commercial.

As to the copyright symbol this is a bit of a muddy area. Copyright is assumed by the act of creation but may well conflict with the terms of the GPL if it came to a point of law. Having stated that the plugn is released under the GPL then this would take precendence over copyright I believe. Asking users to leave the version strip in place is merely asking them to do the courtesy of allowing their site visitors to determine the source of the plugin with links to those involved. As far as I am aware there is little we could do if you decided to remove it as once again the GPL would allow that.

Whether you use this plugin or not is, of course, entirely up to you. There are alternatives which you may find more appropriate.

The difference in placing it on a seperate credits page (as a link+description, without that popup) would be that there is no copyright-thingy sometwhere in the middle of some page where it doesn't belong, istead it would be somewhere where it belongs, next to credits to Apache, PHP and Wordpress

Concerning the commercial thing: Well, I'm creating a page for a allotment garden assosiation (hope that translation makes some sense), free of charge.

However later there may be a subpage where you can rent a parcel (or at least, contact someone with the intent to do that) from that association. That could suffice that the page would be considered “commercial”.

I'm aware that the GPL would probably take precedence, so i would be, concerning the law, be on the save side if I removed the popup etc. But using a piece of Software agaist the will of its creators would be bad carma IMO ;)

So I won't do anything like that without permission.

I'm sorry but I still do not see the difference between a link to a page and a link to a popup. Whichever it is the infrmation it contains will be the same.

And no - I do not believe this is the definition of 'commercial'.
