Andi, I couldn't think of anything else you could have implemented. The PM option is not only “a tick in the box” it is state of the art! I already love it… hopefully the BETA is over soon and I am looking forward to give my forum an update! Our users will love it!

I agree: the new version looks and feels spectacular. Feels faster, too. I hope this skin will be included, too.

Looks very nice, yes.
Do you need for the translations ? I can help with Spanish ….

Thanks for the offer. Out of courtesy it is only right that I should ask the current Spanish translator but if they decline I'll be in touch!

regarding translation:
you remember I had formerly started translating into Romanian but stopped due to lack of time. I now have a client where I need the translation so I wanted to continue and was jsut wondering if that makes sense and the translation can be also used in the new version 3 plugin?

It's going to be a problem actually. Version 3 is so different and there is so much new stuff in it - it's going to need quite a lot of extra work. There are just not going to be language files available when it goes public. This is sad but a simple fact.
I plan to generate the PO file for V3 at the end of this week and then make contact with current translators to see if any are willing to work on it.

ok, I guess I can wait for another week, then translate those language files. Please let me know somehow when the language files are ready for translation.

Translations won't be a problem since forums 'sintax' is well defined and consolidated across different languages, and the .po structure helps a lot, too.
What about customized skins? Will be much work to do?

I hope the code will be clear and commented as in previous version. I had to patch minor features (user info, avatars) and it was very easy to understand. Private messages, badwords and user groups will give to this software a gear more! (i'm always apologizing for my english).
Are there many DB changes or the columns are the same ?
And finally, which is the new functionality more in need of tests ?

well it looks like you have the picture upload feature working.
as far as the skins go, building on the work of Andy, should not be too hard at all to create good custom skins.
Private Messaging is still being tested, you can give it a try here, I believe.
I say 'I believe' because the Group permissions are being used, and you can allow or disallow users access to functions such as messaging and uploads by group permission sets.
Bad word filters are also a part of this version, although there are no default filters defined, you would have to set them yourself.

I currently have image uploads turned off on this site. That's partly because it needs more testing but also because I am not sure I actually wantto let peopl eupload images to my server. This has always appeared to me to be a bit of a security issue. Bue enough people asked for it so it is included.
As to skinning - there are many, many changes. V3 really is a bit of a leap but I have attempted to document the new CSS as much as possible and comparisons with pre-V3 CSS will reveal that much of it is the same.
Finaly, I plan to generate the definitive PO file for V3.0 this coming weekend.

Does that also mean that the code is then public? … I guess not.
Anyway, any update on how the beta is running? Alot of bugs?
Andi, could you guide us, which feature needs more testing?
|
|
|
|
|
No. Sorry. It's going to need a little longer than that!
At the moment a very small and select group (those that have helped with code, design etc.,) have the code and with the exception of my site here, are all using it on local setups to help with testing.
Generating the PO file is that stage that says 'all textual strings are now set and cannot be changed'! The sad thing is that there will be no laguage files available when I intitally let this one out the cage.
The plan then, say around early next week, is to offer the beta to a small group of people who have specifically asked and understand that there will be bugs to iron out. They can use it on public sites of they so wish. And when the bugs stop being found I will release it generally. There will ALWAYS be bugs in software but you go for the 80:20 and then 90:10 and hopefully arrive at 99:1 at some stage.
So far not much has been uncovered. it seems to be going pretty well. And yes - when I offer it to peoplke who are willing to use beta software then I will mention the areas that need the most push. if you want to be added to that list then just let me know.

Andy,
I would like to offer to be another beta tester. I'm currently on V2.0 with minor own changes. You forum is perfect for my needs and my plugins I wrote for WordPress (currently 6000 posts).
Thanks for this work !!

Alex, suggest once again that you update your forum to the latest 2.1 release to avoid potential security risks…
thanks for the kind words!

Mr Papa,
thanks for the note (again), I'm patched my version with the intval() and forgot to count up the version number, maybe I forgot some patches so I decided to upgrade to latest 2.1 yesterday… It's better to stay up to date

Well, I should wait the new Forum version to post this, but I can't wait anymore since Alex Rabe is writing here, too. Move or delete this post if it's OT
My question, infact, is for one of the two author but i can't know exactly who.
I'm using simpleForum, nggallery and wordtube at the same time. Latest versions.
On new FORUM posts (not blog ones) I can show the files contained in the media gallery, using [MEDIA=XX] as the wordtube plugin specify. This is VERY GOOD, since I can upload files one time and show them where I want with that simple sintax, on blog as on my Forum. On the opposite, I can't show galleries, albums neither single pictures with the same technique if I try to reference nggallery files with the similar tag [GALLERY=XX].
I think that wordtube plugin and simple forum maybe work and cooperate with Simple Forum by accident, but this is fantastic.
Would it be possible to have this kind of integration with Next gen gallery, too ?
Thank you,
Alessandro

This issue actually falls into the ALPHABETICAL LOADING category.
Your gallery plugin processes the page content before Simple:press Forum… wordtube processes after…
The wordtube call [MEDIA=xx] is recognized because it exists when wordtube is processed …
since the gallery plugin is called before the forums, the forum output does not get processed by the gallery plugin…
There are methods for altering the loading position of plugins so that the forum is loaded first, or the gallery is loaded last, either one of which will have the desired effect, but instructions and information on these techniques would have to come from wordpress.org as such info falls outside the scope of this plugin.
(that and I got a severe tounge lashing by admins over on wordpress.org for some statements I made over there about bbpress, so I am a bit Leary about giving advice on 'THEIR' program.)

Is Italian one of your languages Radio?
How did you work this out? I'm intrigued…
if this is the problem then yes, it's possible (in theory) to change the load order or - in this case, the page processing order but (1) You nee to dip into code and (2) I am not convinced 100% that is actually always works.

Funny idea,
never thought that somebody combine the formum with the gallery…
Ok, I can add a priority number to my filter, but which one ? 1, 10 50 ?
// Action calls for all functions add_filter('the_content', 'searchnggallerytags');

I would be temptated to temporarily change the plugin name.
I guess that, if Radio is right, it would be sufficient to change the “N” of NextGenGallery in a char following the “S” of SimpleForum-
Infact, N > S > W.
But maybe…Ahem…Probably it is only a coincidence and I didn't understand nothing about load order.
Anyway, I'm not scared by dipping into code since all three plugins are well written and come with commented code. I would simply prefer not to waste time though, so I decided to ask before dipping in

Padre della mia madre era italiano. Famiglia Caruso.
Ho dovuto parlare l'italiano, o il dolore.
If you set the load order, as most plugins do, to null, then the plugins actually load alphabeticaly. Since load order has never been brought up in any of the discussions we've had, I can see no reason that load order has been changed or set specificallt by Andy.
nggallery… SimpleForum … wordtube… <- Since the wordtube replacer worked with Simple forum and the nggallery did not, I assumed the load order shown.
simply try setting the load order of Simple Forum to the head of the que, and see what happens… my guess is, it will show the galleries just fine.
(fyi, Andy, The first line says that my mother's father [my grandfather] was Italian. Her maiden name was Caruso. I had to learn italian, or else.)
