So as you probably know some people post in forums just to create a link back to their site to benefit from search engines giving them credit for this link. The bad news is it can hurt your site and you wouldn’t even know it (links point to porn or something banned by google). Having this feature will allow us to control this.

If you could somehow leverage the wp comments code which currently uses the nofollow tag that would probably be easiest for you. :-)

Thanks for the consideration and keep up the great work!

Here’s an example of how this would work for my advantage.

Real Estate Blog

This link points to my blog and when google indexes your forum, I’ll get credit for the link. :-)

I am aware of several nofollow tag plugins for Wordpress, most of which will work with simple forums and links inside posts.

it is also an available idea to control your meta headers and add a nofollow tag to the forums page. I believe there are plugins for that feature as well.

However responsible admins will control posts with moderation, and on topic links to sites may provide content incentives for other web masters to post.

And that’s the problem with nofollow really. It’s a dual edged sword and not a particularly effective one either. Something this would have to be optional.

if you really think about it, nofollow defeats the purpose of allowing people who add meaningful content to your site, to post their personal URL in thier profiles and link when clicking their names.

The purpose of the "WEB" is not the points of connection, but the links in between, Google recognises this and so rank sites not only on who links to you, but also in who you link to.

There is no site that I can think of that is Banned by google so I am not sure where that argument comes from.

There are, however, sites that a web master may NOT want to be associated with, such as Enlarge Your Penile dot com, but that would be up to the web Master, admin, and moderators to control what posts go up.

Those settings are already in place with moderation tools.

If you intend to allow guests to post, moderate. if you intend to allow registrations, moderate registered users as well, at least the first one.

if you intend to run an open link farm, or an absentee landlord forum and let everyone post unmoderated, expect that you will get spam.

It’s the old complaint, "Doctor, it hurts when I do this…’ … The doc is going to reply ‘Stop doing it’

If you get a sharp pain in your eye when you drink tea or coffee… suggestion… take the spoon out of the cup before drinking… or just switch to milk…
