I think many will agree what WP lacks most is a good userlevel/membergroup setup,
subscriber/contributor/author etc doesn’t cut it, I know there’s a role manager plugin for creating new roles but imho that’s just asking for trouble when used wth other plugins.
I was thinking one possible solution might be to use the forum as a way to set up user groups, specific to the forum, this way you can keep the WP roles as is but use the forum for group level access.
Could simple forum be made to setup groups only for the forum not wp ?
i know there’s a group restriction plugin that does this well but only for pages not posts.
Using the forum for user/group management i think is a nice way to have user-level access outside the WP roles
just a thought

I could see this as an add-on that could work.
Does anybody want to take up the challenge?

on another note, just curious, what happens if say people use the role manager plugin and modify capabilities such as edit or create post, would this effect post editing/creating in SF plugin as well seeing that the SF post is similiar to the wordpress post ? or is it different

It will only effect the forum if you have set the forums up to be available to specific roles. To be perfectly honest, the ‘roles/capabilities’ implementation in WP is a mess and was not really thought out and designed.

Andy,
do you think this really could be done as an add-on to the current SF? I am not sure the current SF pluggability supports this…

It’s like anything else really - if we have a design and can identify the ‘joins’ then support can be built in. I’ll happily change code to acommodate something that is generaly required. But.. my concern with this one is that I tend to believe that anything to do with users/security/roles etc., should really be at the WP site level not at plugin level. There again, I suppose there are people using SF, like me in fact, where the forum is the only point of openness. Still, a root solution I think is better.
(I was confused (especially as it is first thing in the morning), by cartpauj’s post redirecting to the discussion on admin menus? They will be changing in that they are now at the top level on the menubar).
