It seems like there will be times with members of the forum may want to message each other privately or share sensitive information inside the forum, but without sharing private contact information. Being able to send private instant messages would be very cool.

You know there is a forum for raising requests (Discussions).
PM’s have come up before and I appreciate that quite a few people would like to have that. My stock answer - whilst not actually saying I won’t do this at some point - is that this is a plugin to a blogging system NOT a fully-fledged and featured forum system. I think this has to be appreciated. If people want every bell and whistle that comes with the likes of vBulletin then they really should be using a stand alone forum.
As I say, that doesn’t discount the possibly of me adding PM’s at some point but sooner or later the code is going to bloat out of control - it’s already big!

Now why did I get the idea this was not in the discussion thread?! Apologies for that…

Oh, okay. I thought this was the place to raise requests for the next and future releases.
And I do appreciate very much that this is a plugin for WordPress. But the fact that there is already so much incredible functionality just encouraged me to make these feature requests.
Thanks.

Sorry - you misunderstood. This IS the right place to raise requests and suggestions. When I read the first post above I THOUGHT it was in another place. As I say - my apologies.
Please don’t stop making such requests. That IS what these threads are for. And as I say, PM’s are not out of the question. It’s just a bit of a balancing act between user requests - expectations - and wordpress/codebase and database as well. I want to make sure it doesn’t grind to a halt!

I have just recieved more requests from my clients, about this type of feature.
Apparently there is a great need to do private messaging inside of web-sites and even within sections of sites.
My own WP-Chat-plugin is also seeing a great deal of activity even though it is in Alpha, Proof of concept, release.
Even now, I see that Andy is online, and I’d love to quickly send a note to him privately, about this type of addition to the forums, but I cant find a way to grab his attention.
HHHmmmmmmmm…

I second tha request. A PM system would be fantastic, As it stands now, there is no way for users to privatley commicate information aside from passing an email address on a search engine indexed forum page.
the easiest way to implement would be to add a field in the user profile that that can be written by anybody, but only read by the user. then the user can look at their profile and all the messages.
(ie when looking at someboides profile, have a ‘SEND PM’ button and then the AJAX drops down the box)
This way you can integrate easlily without tearing up code
if that is not availiable, may a band-aid solution wouldbe to add a field in the user profile that lets them display their email address.

Hello all,
I’m using WP 2.3.2
I finally found SF after great frustration with bbpress and templating, and the seemingly inactive two other forum plugins whom I won’t name.
I am very happy this first day of install.
As for private messaging or notes, you could install Private Notes and make 2 quick edits to get it working properly, (in "private_notes.php" change two instances of "/wp-admin/profile.php" to "/wp-admin/users.php" then add a link on the appropriate SF pages.
Of course I don’t know how to add it to sf-page.php but I hope someone here will.
My wishlist item is:
I use FireStats which adds user agent info such as browser and os to the comments. I would really like to see that added to the user info section.
Thanks for the great plugin
