I have been installing copies of SF in client blog sites and have noticed one anoying item in the simple forums management window.

It takes a few moments for the ‘Manage Options’ portion of the page to load, depending on the loading of other plugins.

What I mean to say is, when there are relatively few plugins, there is only a minor delay in the ‘Manage Options’ window filling out. However, if there are lots of plugins, the ‘Manage Options’ window waits for all of the plugins to load (as they do for all pages, even Admin pages) and then fills in the options page.

This can result in delays of up to a minute in dealing with SF options. This becomes anoying over time, and frustrating when you have a limited attention span like mine, and you forget what it was you wanted adjusted.

I would like to see the Simple Forum Management presented in it’s own Tab (right up next to Plugins, Users, Options, etc.) in a mannor not unlike other plugins (i.e Simple Tags) with the sub tabs loading directly when called up on the page instead of loading AJAX style.

This may seem like a small option or addition, but I think it would also make programming management less complex, as:

a) each sub tab can be represented in it’s own .php page;
b) each sub tab can have it’s own sub-tabs in their own .php pages.
c) programming can be maintained in .php instead of jumping back and forth into .php and javascript/ajax
d) simple forum management would always available on the top tab row for admins to access quickly, (instead of people like me, digging through Options/users/management tabs looking for the last place you saw ‘Simple Forum’)

The reason it delays opening fully until everything is loaded is that initially it will display as a long list but if yours is taking a whole minute to load then I’d be tempted to find a new host!

Some important points to note here are that tabs are not loaded using AJAX and other than the tab control itself there is no javascript involved. They are all loaded as one (and that is not causing any slowdown as it is all fairly simple HTML). What I personaly like about the current arrangement is that I can make edits to ALL tabs and then just perform the one save. If it was moved to separate pages then I would have to keep loading/saving/loading/saving which, speaking personally, I find far more frustrating and annoying. This would be especially true for someone who was not sure where to look for that specific item…

But does anyone else have any views?

I have sort of noticed the issue, but its never been longer than single digit seconds…  I really like the ability to navigate amongst the option tabs as you stated Andy…  I would lose more time saving each tab individually and waiting for the page reload …

Well… I didn’t notice so long delays than BondageRadio’s, and I like the possibility to change several options at the same time, but a forum is a big part of a website, and I won’t be disappointed if Simple Forum had its own tabs…

I’m sorry, Andy, but Simple Forum is not simple anymore, (except for the fact that it’s in a single WordPress page) and it deserves to have its own tabs…

So if the options stay like this, I will be happy, but if they had there own tabs, I won’t be unhappy. That is my point of view Laughing.

They are here to stay at least in the short term. I think the benefits of being able to edit all settings in one place far exceeds the extra page load/save times of creating multiple pages.

In the future? Who knows? if it does get difficult then I will always review it.

Even if it just moved from under the Management tab, to up NEXT TO Options Tab. I’d be happy.

I personally like the way it is set up now.  I wouldn’t reccomend changing it as that would just add more confusion.  I remember the first time I tried to use SMF and phpBB2…it was a nightmare having to go from page to page reading through and setting every option and then having to hit the save button on every page.  It took, what seemed like forever, just to get it up and running the way I wanted it.  SF is very easy and user-friendly.
