A few things I’d like to see in a future version of Simple Forum:

1. Ability to change or control the URL or the display of the main RSS feed, especially so that it can be redirected to FeedBurner.

2. Ability to control the refresh times of the RSS feeds.

3. The "subscribe" link moved to or repeated right near the "save new post" button. Where it is now is easy to miss.

4. Integrate the forum content with Wordpress in such a way that searching using the forum search function or searching using the blog search function will both return forum content in the results.

5. The ability to change the labels for all buttons or links to SF functions.

6. Addendum: the ability to change post titles when editing them, either as the user or as the admin. (See extra "s" in the title above.)

Thanks!

  1. Dependent on whether I decide V3 is code complete or not (and that decision will be taken in the next day or two) this may make it for 3.0 but it is more likely a 3.1 item. (Whether code complete has much to do with testing time and the extent of what needs testing).
  2. I am not an expert on RSS so I am not sure what ‘refresh’ time you refer to. I was under the impression that RSS refreshes were down to the clients that pull them in not the source?
  3. I am not really that sure I could get the ‘Subscribe’ icon any closer to the ‘Save New Post’ button. And when a post IS saved the screen refreshes on that post with the Subscribe icon directly underneath it. Auto subscribe will hopefully come in 3.1 - at least that’s the plan.
  4. This is a big, big task and if someone who knows their way around the WP search routines fancies taking it on then great.. but it won’t be me.
  5. I can see that might be a nice to have for some users.
  6. The Admin has always been able to change them. I think it would be wrong to allow users to do so however.

Sorry, yes, that’s wrong. What I meant to put there was that it seems like some RSS readers are reloading the feed every single time they check it. I don’t know if SF isn’t delivering a "not changed" message or not.

The Admin has always been able to change them. I think it would be wrong to allow users to do so however.

Please tell me how. I cannot for the life of me see any way to change post titles. By that I mean, to later change the title used when a new topic thread is started.

Is it suposed to? This is news to me. I have to say my own newsreader is smart enough to know what I have already seen. Also - I ddn’t see anything about ‘not changed’ in the RSS specs but I may well have missed it.

I cannot for the life of me see any way to change post titles.

  1. Turn on the Admin Tool Icons in the forum options - or - when logged in as the Admin, turn them on using the icon below the Profile icon (will not appear on the front page)
  2. Navigate to the forum (topic index) that contains the topic title you wish to change
  3. Drop down the Admin Tools against the topic row
  4. Select the "Edit Topic Title’ (or it might say ‘name’!)
  5. Edit and Save.

Regarding the RSS feeds, see number 4 on this page.

Ah, I see. I almost never go into topics that way. I go into them through the list of recent posts at the top above the list of forums. Is there a way to make the tools show up next to a topic while you are in that topic and viewing its messages?

Well posts have ther own set of tools. the topic title is not exposed in the same way in the posts view.

I’ll take a look at the link - thanks
