Thanks for getting 1.4 out there. Love it!
I was testing it on my site (http://www.whatwedig.com) this morning and everything was going great. Then all of a sudden, the icons and formatting disappeared. Instead of icons, I was getting those Xs one gets when the browser can't find the picture. Not sure how that happened. I tried deactivating and reactivating with and without deleting everything. Nothing.
Tooling around, I moved the default folder icon contents in to the main icon folder and that got my icons back. Tried the same for the skins, but that didn't work. Now I have icons, but the formating is still screwed up. Tried presenting it with Wordpress's default Theme and that didn't help either.
Any ideas?

Have you visited the Admin Options panel? if not, you'll need to put all the stuff back where it came from and then set the two drop downs in the top right. My guess is that they were originally being read in from your local cache.
If this isn't the problem , come back and let me know and we'll think again!.

Hmmm…
Originally, the only options I had on the drop downs in the Forum Options were "." So I had not set those. Deleted the default png files and stuff from the root icon and skins folder (I had simply put a copy of everything in each folder) and now the icons are gone again. I went the options menu and the drop downs just had the "." listed, so selected those and updated options. Still nothing Damndest thing. Of course the strangest thing is, everything seemed fine when I first installled it this morning.
It is up right now at http://www.whatwedig.com/?page_id=60 if you want to take a look.

it's not only icons and skiins, you also seem to have lost the jscript folder. There seems to be something quite radically wrong with your installation. Is everything in the correct place? i.e:
/plugins/simple-forum/icons/default/ all the standard icons
/plugins/simple-forum/skins/default/ the default css file
/plugins/simple-forum/jscript/sf.js

Yup, that is the weird thing. Everything is where it should be. Shall I delete it all and start over? While I deactivated and activated the plugin (both with and without the delete everything box checked), I have not gone to my server deleted all the files and reload them.
Out of curiosity, at the drop downs supposed to just have "."s ?
Strangest thing.

I'd certainly try and start over. Leave the tables behind bit get rid of all the files and start clean although this shouldn't make any difference.
Are you seeing ALL of the Admin Options panel? if you are only getting three boxes along the top and no update button then download a fresh copy - there was a php 5 function call that I missed which I have now changed to be php 4 compatible. But that shouldn't have this effect. You don't even a strange path to your weblog.

I'll give that a try and let you know. I downloaded the 1.4 this morning after you had added the message about the PHP 5 issue. So I don't think that is it. And I see everything else fine. We'll see what happens.
Oh and I added a little question to my last post I think after you read it… Are the skin and icon drop downs supposed to just have "." in them if you don't have any other skins or icons in set up?
Thanks.

No - certainly not. They should have 'default' in each - and other skins/icons will add to that list should any appear… That's why I asked if everything was in the right place because the drop downs literally will search the folders /icons/ and /skins/ and expect them to be there. The '.' should get filtered out…

That is interesting then. That has been the case since installed it. It just didn't seem to bother it originally…
Uploading the fresh files now. Keep your fingers crossed.

Well that didn't work. I am going to take another run at it tonight when I get home. A little limited doing this from the office. I'll post tomorrow if I continue having problems.
Thanks!

Got it working! It is one of those strange things though. Essentially, I created another icon and skin directory in each skin/icon root directory, copied the default files into each so that it looked like I had two options for skins and icons. When I went to the options page, I then had "." and "default" as options. Clicked default and all was good. I have no idea why. But hey, it is working.
I am tooling around with it now and will hopefully bring it live in a week or so. Formatting looks good on the Minimalist theme, although when viewing it with IE 6, the forum is 2/3 down the page. Not going to worry to much about that unless you have seen this before and have a quick fix for it.
Thanks again for this great plug in!

Glad you got it up in the end but seeing the '.' parent is a bit worrying and I will need to sort this. Do you know what OS is on the server you are using? Any information would be appreciated.
IE placing it half way down the page is almost certainly going to be the way it is interperting something in the theme - at least that's my guess. Do any other pages exhibit similar behaviour? There has been one other who said this and when they created a standard page it did exactly the same thing!
Do let me know when you're up and running - it's always good to see someone using something of mine!

I hosted by http://www.laughingsquid.net. According to their website:
Our servers are running the Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES 4 distribution of the Linux operating system along with the Apache 2.0 webserver. With the exception of our control panel, all the software we run on our servers is open source.
Re the page down. Hard to say. None of the other pages have any content beyond the text on the WordPress page. So they all appear fine. Also, as you can see from my website, I put in some text on the page to let folks know we are testing the forum. It is at the top of the page, then there is a huge space between the text and the forum itself. Again, this only happens on IE6. IE7 and Firefox seem to interpret it fine. Problem is, of course, I think many basic users are still running IE6. Also, it looks fine in the Default Theme, so it is definitely a Minimalist theme issue. I'll tool around with the theme to see if I can figure out it and report back.

Tha nks for the info. Linux I expected to be fine so I'll have to fine-tune the code. This was the part I originally put in using a php 5 call which I was used to… not so used to the php 4 equivalent. But I will sort it.
The forum runs completely in the 'content' of the page. It displays nothing outside of the content area. I am only guessing here bit it seems likely that many themes take it for granted that the content will be basically pure text with maybe an image or two - they do not expect divs and tables etc.
One thing you could try (just in the page.php template file) is moving the call for the sidebar before the cinbtent instead of after (which is where I assume it is). IE might deal witu it better then but again - some themese fall ocer of you try this but what is there to lose as long as you can rewind the change?

We have been testing it for a couple of weeks now and everything is working great…. Except of course the stupid IE6 formatting problem. From what I can figue, the side bar and the forum do not want to be next to each other in IE6… So, with my normal page.php set up, the text of the page shows up at the top where it is supposed to, but the forum shows up down below, right after the last line the side bar takes up. If I change the load so that the sidebar loads after, then the sidebar doesn't show up until the last line of the forum. I have probably exhausted my limited knowledge of html and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. As I mentioned, it is at http://www.whatwedig.com. Luckily, running IE7 or Firefox, it looks great. So not sure you will be able to see the problem, but it is there.
Good times!

Isn't this the 'minimalist' theme? if it is you might be interested in this thread.
I just looked using Firefox for my Mac and I see no sidebar at all? Have you removed it completely? I will try and look at it in IE a little later on but if the sidebar is not there it wont help me try and track down your problem I'm afraid.
Also, I'm curious how you came to have 20 posts in a forum with no topics! Is that a bug or did you delete them directly?

Sorry, just removed it completely so we could launch the Forum, but I'll take a look at the thread you mentioned.

Sadly, that didn't fix it. :-( I have removed the sidebar from that page for now, but hopefully, we can figure out what is causing it.

Well I was poking around your site taking a look at the CSS when something happened! In the forum view, the topic list was displayed to the right of the search forum box. This is caused by the CSS line that was in the other thread… I really do not understand why a fieldset is defined inb the CSS for the left side. What is it used for?
One thing you could try although I don't hold out much hope. You could go into the 'framework.css' file and find the first defs for #sforum which sets the width at 100%. Try taking it down to say, 95% or even 'auto' to see if that helps with the sidebar problem.

Yea, I had noticed that forum box problem to the far right before — it only happens in Firefox. Deleting that css line seemed to fix it though. At least for me. I'll try the framework.css and see what that does.

Framework.css changes didn't work. Tried 95% and auto. This is the damndest thing!

Well I still can't take a look as you still have the sidebar off!
I'd be looking for a 'clear' statement somewhere for starters. Your CSS issues a 'clear' statement in elements with an id of 'subheader', 'breadcrumbs' and 'footer'. It sounds unlikely but are any of these used in the sidebar?
Another thing I have come across before when there is a difference between the way Firefox and IE display things is the use of margins. IE interprets margins incorrectly and two elemenst side by side can often fight when margins clash. IE seems to do better with padding. Either way this is a theme related issue. If you can put the sidebar back at sme convenient time I am quite willing to take a look to see if I can find what the problem is.

Sorry about that. Sidebar is back on. Will be through tomorrow morning. Totally appreciate you taking a look. Remember, this particular issue only shows up with IE 6. IE7 seems to read it fine.
Thanks again!

Got the 1.5 up and running. Seemed to have fixed the html button, but the link button still isn't working. I'll check that again later. Heading out to dinner now.
Interestingly, now formatting issue is showing up in IE7 (this madness never ends :-)), but it is different. Splitting up the forum section between top two bars and the rest of the forum section. Interesting stuff. Firefox still seems to work right. And one other little tidbit if it helps… in IE6, the box (border) around the first bar in the forum appears at the top of the page, stretches (empty) until under the sidebar at which point the Current User…. Login Register shows up.
