Hey Andy, just wondered if you had a list of features that you plan to work, time permitting for these nice forums.

Like you, I have searched for a proper answer and not found any that were really acceptable.  Even started writing my own, but never enough time.  Lately, I have been using bbpress for my sites because its very extensible for my needs with the plugin interface.  Unfortunately, as a beta (using that term liberally) its very, very young and keeping up with a moving target is tough. Other options just dont integrate well with wp.

Is there a plugin type interface with your forums or do mods need to be to the core files themselves?  Or planned? No issue with making mods myself, its just harder to upgrade in the future.

The one key element that I see missing from yours that I would desire would be the private forums one called out here:

http://www.stuff.yellowswordfish.com/index.php?pagename=support-forum&forum=11&topic=127

After a quick 5 minute (maybe) gander through the code, it seems doable (open mouth, insert foot?).  Just wondered if you had it in progress.

Also, are your forum users integrated with the wp users?  Guess I could go look, but the thought just ocurred to me as I was ready to close this post as yours dont appear to be integrated…

Thanks…

Welcome back! OK - let's answer down the list.

  1. Yes - there is a list of stuff to be done. I have published it before and guess I ought to do so again. I'l get on to that.
  2. No - there is no 'plugn type' interface or hooks. But… I am considering that as there are a couple of things I'd like to write that would be extremely optional and only of interest to a small few. This is on the plan for 1.9 as 1.8 concentrates largely on security issues.
  3. Private forums, of the type mentioned in the link, were released in the current version 1.7 - that is tied in with WP roles. You can make an entire 'group' private or specific forums within a 'public' group.
  4. Yes - the forum is linked directly to WP users via registration and login. And yes, mine is integrated although I have made registrations optional and only use this in the forums - not on my weblog.

For a complete list of features I'd visit the plugin page itself. But I hope that helps.

Outstanding! Guess its time for me to install on one of my test sites and play around…

wasnt sure you would remember Wink with all the other traffic here… and bad on me as I did read that page, but didnt scroll all the way down to the bottom and see the 1.7 additions as the top mentioned the key points and still talked about 1.6.. if I had, I would have seen the private stuff Embarassed maybe a reversal of the change log? Tongue out

Thanks!
