hi andy (and radio)!
my site was hacked months ago and i just discovered what it was as it crashed my site again. a link to the hack ( ro8kfbsmag.txt )
is provided at end of this post. a by-product of the hack is it has moved my SF from the “page” to the “post” mode. within ( ro8kfbsmag.txt ) are instructions on how to again put pages in their proper place. do you have any experience, advice here B4 i attempt to move things? here is an interesting tale if you have not already read it… http://wordpress.org/support/topic/141041?replies=38 r

Bad luck.
The main difference between a post and a page (but not the only one) is in the 'post_type' column of the 'posts' table. For s standard post the word 'post' is used and for a standard page the word 'page'. Pretty simple. So if you can edit your db (via a tool like phpMyAdmin) then it is easy to make these changes.
Pages can have entries in the popstmeta table - for example, if they have theor own template defined. But once you have access to the record as a page it shoud be easy to correct thos sort of thing via the wp admin interface

ok, understand the typical post vs page and can fix in phpmyadmin. thanks for explaining that.
how does SF fit in? everything SF will fall into place? anything special to do? looking for “sf” headers? it will be pretty easy to recognize and fix once inside phpmyadmin?

Well, assuming SF wasn't hacked then as long as the page ID and page slug match those set in the forum admin options you shoul;d be OK.

andy,
also, i am going to backup db as of today. then restore my server back to 3/30, two days prior to a big rush on my site ( 4/1 of course ) hoping i can go back prior to the wp-options crash.
if all goes well, or not, i am going to upgrade from wordpress v 2.1.1 to v 2.5. any advice before i proceed? thanks. r

hmm, this may be a duplicate reply, sorry…
andy,
a friend who knows a little phpmyadmin followed up on your ” bad luck ” remark above and responded = ” I can find the forum posts as described , however, when I update 'post' to 'page' inside the db the 404 error still exists “

What 404 error? Are you referring to the forum giving a 404?
Check slug and ID in the forum options (admin) match the 'page' id and slug. And perfrom an update permalink from the forum Options Toolbox tab.

I have taken a look at your site and think I have the answer to your 404 Error.
The main site menu is located at http://www.petmonologues.com/
However the rest of the site is viewed at http://www.petmonologues.com/pet022207/
Try updating your permalink in the forum's admin to reflect pet022207/sf-forum

hey radio!
i had a good feeling about your suggestion. i updated permalinks. note: i have two htaccess = one in front of pet022207 + one after. i just updated the one in front and looked at the one after. both are the same now so i did not have to modify the one after. make sense ?
anyway, i surfed the site a bit… ;-(

radio, note: i reread your suggestion and did not notice updating the FORUM's permalinks. so i went to manage>simple forums>permalinks = ;-(
btw - after this big hack i made a change to the htaccess after pet022207 = before the forum = i have an additional htaccess code = indexignore ( listing readme, htaccess, header, vti. etc. )
i put this code in after this mess and i did not comment at the time what exactly was the purpose of this code. i think it tells apache not to list files for the world to see.

i have upgraded to wp v 2.5 and slowly building up. a couple of things
1) i went into the db and manually changed “post” to “page” where appropriate and it is working
2) i took out the extra security of an htaccess code in wp-admin directory and the 404 went away. will return to this issue
3) i had simple forum v2.1 on my old wp v 2.1.1 and two things need to be done.
a) change the forum “post” to “page”
b) install your new forum. which version to you recommend and anything special to do? there is no “simple forum” plug (though the db has SF v2.1 info on it) in the site at present. only two plugins are currently installed. “secure and accessable php contact form” and “simple tags”
any advice, instructions on installing your forum? note: i am eventually going to turn put the forum on a page so it is as large as your forum and notice you have provided clear instructions to do this.

I'd be tempted to wait for 3.1 which, all being well, should be along very soon. Just to save going through the process twice. Other than that I have no specific advice….

3.1 sounds good. i will wait. figuring out the new 2.5 widget interface will keep me busy if i can even figure it out how to get my old stuff migrated. thank you. r

while i am waiting 3.1, is it feasable to prepare the new css/page for the larger format. or does 3.1 have to be installed.
|
|
|
|
|
Not at all. It's only a theme template after all.

andy, while eagerly awaiting 3.1 i can't not read about security/forums, etc. i found this. do you know anything about this issue?

Not personally no - I don't, of course, use it
I do recall the advisory being published though.

what i am really asking is if v3.1 is safe. never did find out how hackers got in my blog. r
|
|
|
|
|
It's as safe as we can make it. We do take security very seriously.
You did note, I hope, that the advisory you linked to was NOT for this plugin?

Sure but check recent posting as there have been quite a few with specific upgrade problems and you might find a resolution already posted.
