i had problems upgrading from v2.0 to v2.1. i uninstalled to fix it
removing my existing tables. Now v2.1 is up but all previous content is
gone. I have a database backup. Can I use that data again? If so, where
would I find it? I am a beginner regarding databases and if I can fix
but can’t figure out I have a friend who will help. Can I get the data
again? If so, where would it be found. I hope this is enough info.
Thanks.

Well the first thing to say, I guess, is that the uninstall does state clearly that it removes ALL data. Your next problem will be that there were table modifications between V2.0 and V2.1 so just copying the data from a backup to your live tables may result in errors and may not work at all.

Personally, I would do this and it may be the only way to get it all back as it should be:

  1. Uninstall 2.1 (and remove the new tables and settings)
  2. Deactivate the plugin and remove it completely from the server
  3. Re-instate the tables from your backup AND the option records.
  4. Put 2.1 back in the plugins folder and Activate

I think that may be the only way. Miss any of those steps and things may just get worse.

ALL of the specific forum tables start with the two letters ’sf’. But just as importantly, there are records in the WP Options table. The keys to all of these also start ’sf’ so they are easy to identify.

You will have lost some data from the usermeta table but that may not be disastrous.

And knowing what the problem was with your original attempt at an upgrade to 2.1 would be useful in case it happens again.

thank you for the quick response. will proceed per your suggestions.

i am getting a new issue since. i am getting can’t modify header/header already sent and unknown column user_level errors when i try and save a new post and image upload is also broken.

i have not touched database other than the uninstall. is this an isolated incident or could it be related…

Well the forum uninstall only removes the forum tables and option records so I doubt it is anything to do with that.

But you need to triubleshoot that. I;d start by deactvating all plugins and seeing what happens and if it goes away, reactivate them one at a time testing in between each one.

the plug-in "notify blog authors" v1.0 no longer is capatible. it was last updated in 2005. so there you go. not a big issue.

still having uploading problems. the link to the uploaded image looks like this…

domain.com//../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../tmp/image.jpg  (can’t find "tmp" file)

should look like this…

domain.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/image.jpg

good morning. i think. it went from 50F yesterday afternoon to -24F wind chill this morning.

i notice that ALL my PAGES are gone. i did find one page "link" and got a 404 with the following error message = WordPress database error: [You have an error in your
SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server
version for the right syntax to use near '' at line 1]
SELECT count(*) FROM

any advice on this? shut down all plugs again or is this a code tweak?

thank you.

in testing I have seen this occur a couple times, I have found that optimizing the sql database prior to upgrading to a new version of SFP prevents the error.

once the error occurs however, you must disable the plugin and optimize, roll back the version number and re-update.

it should be noted that this is true for the alpha 3.0 version which has not yet been released, and I was not around for the update 2.0-2.1

if this does NOT work for 2.0-2.1 then I will help you out privately through e-mail exchange rather than in the forums.

when you stay disable and roll back, do you mean uninstall v2 and reinstall v1, the original forum? then optimize?

also, not exactly sure what you mean by optimize sql. looking into that now. thanks. r

andy, back to you for the moment. i don’t wish to go back to my backup. it is a trade off and i will rebuild the forum content from scratch.

what i do want to do is get my PAGES back.

to andy and radio. what is best chance?

1) uninstall v2.1 and reinstall v2 (too late for this?)

2) uninstall v2.1, optimize sql, reinstall v2.1 (note: optimization is clearly above my skillbase and my database person feels that your support is a better fit on this one)

please advise, thanks. r

BIGGER problem. all my TAGS (in post and in tag cloud) are 404’s though there is no error message.

when i deactivate "simple tagging" plug my sidebar disappears and in place of the tags i get this =

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: stp_posttags() in /wp-content/themes/3c-black-letterhead/post.php on line 21

don’t know if this message would have occurred prior to upgrade as this may be normal upon deactivating of plug?

is this a permalink thing? i don’t want to touch anything until i hear from you. thanks.

Thanks for helping Radio but most of this stuff should be taken to the WP support forums. It is nothing to do with SF…

andy, i really did not do anything but upgrade SF. i did not do it correctly and now i have several problems. the SF plug is third party to wp. you/radio/forum are best to attempt a fix it seems, not the wp people unless it is clearly an isolated wp problem which you can identify.

if there is a fee to fix this, let me know. my site is a hobby, albeit i time-consuming one and i understand the time thing. this should be a win-win here.

i am frontend, not technical and you can see this is a serious problem. that said i am off to teach a design class.

thanks so much and let me know. r

Nothng to do with money. Your problems may have started with SF but what concerns me is the removal of tables that came afterwards. Most of the things you have mentioned since then point towards other missing data. You really would be best advised to try and go to a complete backup. It may be that your host have backups that could be restored to before these problems began.

But, if anyone can help remotely like this then it just might be Radio who appears to have infinite reserves of patience and knowledge.

your points are solid and taken as such. will address this in the morning tomorrow and then all day friday when i am free. i will check my email for radio. i just asked to see what my isp can do. i am very good at backing up on the computer. the server side backup, another story. new habits need to be engrained…

If your hosting package includes cPanel this offers an excellent backup system for both the database and the actual files that you can perform any time. If not there is a phpMyAdmin plugin for WP that enables an export of the database to your local PC. This is a great option as you do not need to use ftp or any other tool - it’s right there in your admin panel and usually only takes a minute or so. I do mine regularly.

thanks andy, i am on cpanel. my isp says there was an error in their config so they have no backup on my site.

radio is working on things and i don’t know if he is sharing with you at this point. he did mention that SF resides in the PAGE table? is that why the pages disappeared when i dropped the tables? i am coming to the conclusion the page writing will have to start over at the end of the day. there was quite a bit of content.

a SF link is currently sitting where all my pages were. the link stays there whether the plug is active or not.

does SF issue a command = DELETE FROM or TRUNCATE TABLE ? when we drop tables?

SF doesn’t ‘reside’ in the ‘page’ table - and there is no ‘page’ table. Page records are stored in the POSTS table. SF makes use of a single page to display forum data in.

if you uninstalled SF prior to deactivating it it removes its own tables (as all plugins should) - it doesn’t touch the rest of your sites tables.

if you removed the POSTS table then you will have lost your page records and your post records. But this is nothing to do with the forum.

well the posts are there. so maybe the pages are there too. there are no pages in the wordpress admin section, not even SF, though SF is sitting in the pages section on the blog. is this a WP forum question you think?

i am also afraid to add a page right now until we know more. but i am continuing to write a post or two….

the tag thing is very serious and curious. tags made in posts both prior to the table drop and after the table drop = 404

Not knowing exactly how tags, Google works, my search visits have dropped off today. Usually I get one Google search hit every five minutes. My tags have been dead for a week as of  today. I have nine total Google search hits in the last 24 hrs. Coincidence or tag related?

I am through with posting. Radio wants me to put some content in the forum now and test it.

I am sorry to hear about all of your problems but seriously, this is one for the WP forums who are far more likely to be able to help although I suspect their response is going to be ‘revert to a backup’.
