Another Title Bar Problem

We had a prior discussion about how it is impossible (for some reason) to set the Simple:Press Forum as your homepage and still have the posts display their titles in the browser title bar (instead, it displays the forum home title on every single forum topic and post).

So I decided to make a few changes and remove my forum from my home page.  The problem is mostly solved–it now shows the post titles in the title bar–BUT, after the post title, it inserts this symbol:

 %pa

. . . followed by the forum home title.

Yes, I am using All-In-One SEO, and I have done everything imaginable to try to get rid of this “%pa” insertion, with no luck.  Any ideas on how to get rid of it or what is causing it?

Mr. Pappa, it looks like this is the exact same problem I am having, thanks!  I'm a little confused about how he solved the problem, though.

You suggested:

“what is your permalink structure?  It uses the % sign for parameters, maybe issue there? are you using All in One SEO?  again, they use % as parameter…”

And he replied:

“You called it–All in One SEO.  Added a dash and it's fixed.”

But where did he “add a dash”?  To the permalink structure page, or to something on the All in One SEO plugin page?

I don't want to make a mistake and screw anything up, thanks for your help.

go to your options page for All in One SEO…

look at your page title format and paged format…  I suspect its the latter…

Still can't figure it out.  The “page title format” seems to be the thing to do it, since whenever I make changes to it that's the only thing that affects the Simple:Press forum post titles.

Still, I've tried adding dashes everywhere, deleting % symbols, and a hundred other things.  Most of that just messes up the title bar title completely.

Any more suggestions?  I feel like I'm close to a solution here but I don't know what to do.  Here is what my “page title format” looks like now:

%page_title%

Also, I don't know what “paged format” is meant to do, but no matter what I do to that category it doesn't change a thing on my forum or blog.  Here is what my “paged format” looks like now:

- Part %page%

Thanks again for your continued help!

Hunter to the rescue!

My guess is that you have All in one SEO enabled on your installation–is that correct?  If so, you can correct the problem by going into your All in one SEO settings and adding a dash or period or something of the like to the end of your “Page Title Format” and that should correct your problem.

E.G. '%page_title%'———-> '%page_title% -'

More of a workaround than anything, but essentially you have SWP and AIOSEO fighting for control over your page titles and the dash will help separate the values.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Hunter!

Makes more sense…  I guess by me using:  %page_title% | %blog_title%

the separator and title part have the same effect as the -

Exactly–also just an added note, title bar punctuation in general has little effect on SEO and helps readers break down 'clumps' of information into manageable concepts.

Rather than: Free MP3s Download Fast Now Albums Artists

You can use: Free MP3s | Download Albums, Artists, FAST

Which ends up being much better overall.  Most big sites use it–in fact, look at this site right now! :P

Thanks, guys, adding %page_title% | %blog_title% was finally the trick that worked.  I'm very grateful for your help!

Bummer - that solution won't work for me. I only want page_title in the page titles, not the blog name…I find that leaving the title blank gives me the same problem above. When I use AIO SEO and specify a page_title, then it just displays the page title, won't rewrite it for forums/topics.

I tried putting - before and after the title, doesn't work.

Not a deal-breaker, but maybe this can be looked at for 3.2? :)

Me too. I only want the %page_title in there. I don't want my %blog_title to be in the title.

I guess I'll have to live with it like this…

we are shooting for a beta release in early November, provided we can finish up the last couple of features we are working on.   you can get a look at some of the new features on our trac site.  we too are quite excited about the new version.  if everything goes according to plan, formal release should be in mid or late decemeber.
