Example 1 - Good Question:
From Guest BOB (valid email address)
Topic: Recieving a 404 error when navigating to the forum topics.
Message:
Hi,
I have this odd error whenever I try to navigate to any group or forum page inside my forums, I recieve a 404 error. I can see the Forums just fine when I am at the forum page, but all links deeper into the forums return 404 error.
This is my website: http://www.example.com/
and this is my forum: http://www.example.com/support/sf-forum/
Thanks in advance.
Robert
This works well because of several reasons. BOB gives a clear description of his error, when it happens, where it happens, and provides links for the support staff to look for themselves to try to duplicate the error.
In Bob's case we can simply say that his forum slug should be changed from sf-forums to support/sf-forums to reflect that his forums are on a sub-page in his blog. This should correct the error in this example.
Example 2 - Bad Question:
From: Guest (with invalid email address)
Topic: My site is broken
Message:
your forum broke my site. I can not get anything to working. I updated everything and it is still broken.
sorry my english.
English is NOT REQUIRED for asking for help in these forums. Some of our staff and quite a few of our regular users are multi-lingual. Feel Free to ask your question in the language you feel most comfortable with.
In most cases we can redily identify German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Japanese and Mandarin Chinese. If you think your language may be confused with another similar language, such as Afrikaner, or German may be confused for Dutch, then simply say in your language which language you are typing in, i.e. : In het Nederlands:
In this example, obviously, no information is given about the error,
no web site is referenced, and no information about the user is provided. We simply can not help Guest, and only HOPE that he returns with some more information.
BOTTOM LINE:
If you need help, be specific about the help you need. Provide as much information as you can. At the very least, show us the problem or point us to where we can see it for ourselves.
