Hello,
first of all sorry for my poor english. I have a problem with installing Simple:Press Forum. I installed it correctly but it doesn't show up in the frontend.
URL: http://www.ej-schwandorf.de/wp/forum
Forum Version: 3.1.3 WP Version: 2.6.3 PHP: 4 MySQL: 5
Please help me.

Have you created a link for it? In your sidebar or somewhere? I'd suggest using the WP template tag wp_list_pages() (See the WP Codex - Template Tags).

The page is created and listed, but it's emtpy. There is only the heading “Forum” but no content

Take a look at the topics in the online help - installation troubleshooting. The one called 'Nothing Displays' - that is the usual reason for this.

I'd love to look at the online help, as i can only see 'Index of /forum' on my forum.
However the button linking to the online help is disabled ie i click it and nothing happens.
Would you provide the link for it?

Where do you see 'Index of /forum'? This sounds more like a directory listing.
And where is the online help button that is disabled?
Go to Admin > Forum Menu > Online Help

I see 'Index of /forum' at mysite/forum. My post 'Forum Just Displays Index' on 5 November gives details.
The online help button that's disabled is at the location you gave: Admin > Forum menu > Online Help.

My apologies that your initial post was not answered. I assure you that is unusual and an oversight.
This is very, very strange. You do NOT have the forum installed as far as I can see. The page you are seeing is a server directory listing. I see no evidence that the plugin is actually installed.
So let's start over. After you activated the plugin did you go through the actual 'install' routne from the forum menu? And if the answer to that is yes - do you see anything in the Admin 'Forum' menu? And can you access any of those screens?
Also - did you copy the plugin to the correct place - so that the 'simple-forum' folder is located in the 'plugins' folder?

No problem not answering my intial post - you have a lot to get through!
I went through the intall routine from the forum menu, and i do see the Forum Admin menu ie that shows Manage Options, Manage Forums etc
I checked that the 'simple-forum' folder was in the right place - in the plugins folder - and it is.

|
|
|
|
Well even more strange.
I just went to take another look at the link you gave us above and it loaded up your forum as it should. Have you changed something?

I haven't changed anything - but then i'm still not seeing a forum. I checked from another machine just to be sure, and it didn't come up from there either.
I just realised why you saw a forum - the link above was given by lastnightfall. My forum's at http://australian-vegan-business.com/forum/

Maybe you have done everything ok, but usually link to forum is sth. like this http://www.yourwebpage/?page_id=###.
Instead of ### there should be randomed number generated by SF froum upon installation and it is shown on main page of admin menu. Under “Forum Page Details” there are two fields “Forum Page Id” and “Forum Page Slug”.
So my guess if forum is not showing up under Pages in your WP theme, then do it manualy, take number from “Forum Page Id” type in manually “http://australian-vegan-business.com/?page_id=###” replaye ### with numbers.

Whoops! Thought it was weird
(1) OK - down to basics. have you tried the permalink? If not do this: Go to Admin > Settings > Permalink and without changing anything click on 'Save Changes'. Do you get a message saying your .htaccess file could not be written to?
(2) If the above was successful go to Admin > Forum > Options > Toolbox tab and click on the Update Permalink button. Please tell me what it set the permalink to?
(3) Go to your blog, load the 'home' page and then click on your 'forum' link. Anything?
(4) If still nothing check the page-ID and the page-slug of the WP 'page' (from Manage Pages) that the forum created when it was installed. Then go to Admin > Forum > Options > Admin tab and make sure that the Page ID and Page slug fields are identical. If you need to change either repeat steps 2 and 3.
(5) Finally do you have any other plugins installed that manage permalink redirection?

Here are my answers, first to palenholik:
I did as you said and used the page id instead of /forum, but the results were the same ie i saw the index page, just like when i use …/forum.
YS, my answer to your questions:
1) I went to Admin > Settings > Permalinks and saved without changing anything. Wordpress told me my settings had been updated - there was no error message.
2) When i clicked Update Forum Permalink in Admin > Forum > Options > Toolbox the permalink was the same ie after the update it was …/forum.
3) I went to my blog, loaded the home page, but don't have a link on that to my simple-press forum yet. However i did add 'forum' to the end of the address and hit that but got the Index as usual.
4) The page ID and page slug of the Forum 'page' in WP (Manage Pages) is the same as in the forum Admin tab.
5) There are no plugins i've installed to redirect permalinks. Although i don't know if any of the ones i have do that incidentally. I'm guessing not. The closest i can see to something like that is FeedBurner FeedSmith. As i mentioned in the initial thread i started though, the plugin Max Banner Ads doesn't work. Although i don't think that plugin has anything to do with redirection.

I am struggling here! One thing I should have asked. On the forum > Options > Admin tab where the page slug is - do you have a slash in there? It should (in your case) read 'forum' not '/forum'. Just make sure that is correct.
The odd thing here, of course, is that WordPress itself should be loading this correctly. It is a WP 'page' and, as such, should have no problem being loaded. All the forum plugin does is take the url and work out what content is to be displayed in the page. You are not getting the actual page which is the real crazy thing.
Do you have any otber pages? And if so do they load up?

Rico, this may require us taking a closer look inside WP to see whats going on. Would you be willing to set us up a temp wp admin account to have a look? If so, please PM Andy andy myself the account details and we can have a closer clook.

Rico,
please make the change in this thread. Things are not getting updated because you nor the temp account you created are getting access. Let me know when you have done this.

Have you had any third party forum software installed before? a non wp forum app? really confused by the stuff I am seeing in the forum “directory”.
any chance you can give me a temp ftp account access to your server? or control panel access? (if so, PM me) understand if you dont feel comfortable doing that. it just seems that there is already something in a directory called forum under you root directory on your server.

You came up with the answer Mr Papa!
I did try some nonWP forum software in the past. Recenlty i tried bbPress, which i didn't like. While i uninstalled it using Simple Scripts, that left an empty forum directory in my public_html folder that i didn't think about.
As soon as i read your post, i remembered it, renamed it and… wala, the SP forum appeared!
That's the main thing taken care of, however i still have a few other questions:
1) Should i now follow your tutorial on narrow themes? http://www.stuff.yellowswordfish.com/creating-custom-page-templates/
2) Should i also return the 3 files you asked me to change back to their original state?
3) The Online Help button in Manage Options still doesn't work. Any suggestions for that?
4) The Max Banner Ads plugin also doesn't work. Ideas on that?
5) Regarding an email address for gravatars, what's a correctly entered email address? It's written like a standard address that you'd use to send an email. There are no spaces - eg email @ goopy.com - and no mixed case.

1) sorry, almost 3 am here… cant look at page now.. but if you think its too narrow, then yes
2) no, leave those files alone… you have fixed bugs with the changes
3) interesting… may still want that account after all to research
4) not familiar with that plugin… what does it attempt to do?
5) I was refering to an address like MrPapa@somewhere.com wouldnt work due to our bug… it must be lowercase mrpapa@somewhere.com. we, of course, willl get that fixed in v4

1) ok, i'll take a look at the tute.
2) good, thanks.
3) i deleted the account before i read your post, but i recreated it again just in case.
4) Max Banner Ads allows you to manage, rotate and place banner ads in different locations.
5) the email address on my profile is all lower case.
It does contain a hyphen though - that's part of my address. Could that be it?
