Getting confused - 404 errors after install

Hey. I just installed the Forum software and I really like what I see. It seemed to integrate into the website pretty well.I was able to setup forums and settings pretty well.

However I am getting some strange stuff here. After setting up the Forums, I select one of them, it would then go to http://www.geekazine.com/forum/news/page-1, but I would get a 404 error:

Error Corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '' at line 1]
SELECT tt.term_id FROM wp_term_taxonomy tt, wp_term_relationships tr WHERE tt.taxonomy = 'category' AND tt.term_taxonomy_id = tr.term_taxonomy_id AND tr.object_id =

I have a feeling that once the forums are populated with posts that will change. I just cannot post anything to begin with.

I have been trying to deduce the issue but without change. I noticed that when I go into the plugin, it says “Update to Version 3.1.4″. I go back to the webpage but ver. 3.1.4 is not on the site.

I am on WP 2.6.1. I have disabled the plugin for now. I can reinable if needed, but the error above is all you get.

the error message you are getting there is not a forum message and does not relate to forum tables. I have come across this before on this forum and I believe t is a conflicxt woth another plugin. Try dsabling them one at a time to see if it stops happening.

Oh yes - 3.1.4 is an update issued to day to correct a security problem and it is, indeed on the plugin page for download. (it just contains the changed files).

I had a similar problem as I'm new to this forum product. Try updating the permalink setting on the 'Toolbox' tab

Well it turns out that error message is not forum specific. Looks like I have something else to fix…. AUGH!

I am still getting a 404 error though. I will try creating a different template for the Forum page. Maybe that will fix things.

I doubt it's anything to do with the template although I could be wrong. I'd still check your plugins first

I found the problem with the 404. I have a plugin called “Related Posts” and it was tripping on the 404 program because it had no data to pull from. So I resolved that problem, but the 404 still exists.

I turned all plugins off and it still came up with a 404. I have the forum turned on right now if you want to see:

http://www.geekazine.com/forum

What would happen if I typed in http://www.geekazine.com/forum?board=news (I don't know the nomenclature, so it's just a rough estimate) instead of http://www.geekazine.com/forum/news/page-1?

Well first off visiting your forum page I am NOT getting a 404 - I am seeing the frobnt page of the forum.

As to your question I would suspect nothing… or perhaps you would get a 404 with that. The forum ould not recognise it anyway.

teh forum url is made of the page slug/permalink followed by tje forum slug, topic slug and page number.

The front page is fine. It's when you go into a forum like NEWS. I can't get past that.

Well I would guess that either your permalinks are not in sync or you ave some sort of redirect set up that is stopping the forums rewrite rules from being accepted.

At the moment, however, your site is stopping with a 500 server error.

Updated permalinks for plugin and wp in general but doesn't care… change my root url but did change, delete all cookies etc. didn't change.

Any help on this? here is my forum

Thanks

Rwin

It works for me…. no problem getting to the forums, but of course no topics… certainly no 404 errors…

Yeah, the 500 error was happening because of a bad .htaccess file. It's fixed now.

I'll try changing permalinks, but it's still doing it.

One thing I should mention is this website is technically a subdomain. The URL should resolve to geekazine.com, but it's really http://geekazine.anotherdomain.com. I don't know if that might be messing things up….

That I do not know but it sounds like it might be possible. It does, of course, function OK on a normal sub-domain as this forum runs in one…

404 errors really do come down to permalinks/redirection problems. try excluding the forum from your redirection…

Not sure what you mean by excluding the forum. Is there another way to access the page?

The 500 error continues to happen. Only plugin I've installed is this one. I need to resolve asap, or else I'll have to disable.

I am still at a loss here. This should be working. Any other thoughts? I really need to resolve or move on.

What did you mean by excluding the forum?

No other thoughts. The point was that you say it;s one a sub-domain bit ti doesnlt have a sub-domain URL (like this one does) so are you using some kind of redirect? if so - exclude the forum from it. if that is not the case then I have no idea. I can only repeat its down to redirection of permalinks. As to your 500 error you need to bring that up with your host to finds the cause. They can be very difficult to track down.

I don't think it's a subdomain issue. It resolves at the host. It's just that I get no error log when this happens.

I DID try something different. I changed the Permalink to Default and noticed it tried to resolve at http://www.geekazine.com/forum/news/page-1. When I changed the URL to http://www.geekazine.com/?page_id=478/news/page-1, everything then went fine. However, if I change the Permalink back (or to any other structure), it goes back to a 404.

thoughts?

Well, I uninstalled the Forum and was about to move on when I decided - what the heck. Let's reinstall. I did that and everything started working properly. I guess it was the install that mucked up.

Interesting….
