My forum does not seem to be working at all. I registered as a new user but I have no log in button and no way to add a topic or post a reply. Is there a demo somewhere of how this should work?

No demo but I suspect you have not spent time looking through the options and the permissions. That is where your problem will lie. There is also quite a bit of online documentation in the help from the menu.
