Simple Forum Database Usage & Caching

I came across this plugin a few weeks back, and decided it might be worth using for a future project. I've just installed it on WP 2.33, and I think it all looks fantastic, especially how well integrated it is with WP.

I happened to have the $wpdb->num_queries; output displaying in the footer, and with just one admin user, and no 2 empty forums created, it was chucking out 85 queries. Are there any plans to make it less resource intensive, or anything I can do to cut the database usage a little? I'm wary about using something that calls the database so many times per page load (reminds me of Pligg in its early days).

On a similar topic, is Simple Forums compatible with wp-super-cache? I realise that it may not be so appropriate for forums, but wondered whether it would cache forum pages, and if so, whether the cache is flushed upon new threads / posts being added.

PS. I also noted that the plugin adds about 15 queries to all my other blog pages, even though they are seemingly not connected to the forum side of things?

the basic fact is that there is an awful lot going on and the more people ask for…. well speaks for itself.

I am continually looking at ways to optimise and it is, to me, a priority whenever there is time of work needs to be done. However it must be realised that a forum is not like a blog - it is a far more dynamic venture even down to behaving and displaying differently depending on who the viewer is.

No it will not work with wp-supercache.

I have no idea why there should be 15 extra queries on a blog page but I will see if I can pin that down. An awful lot of effort has gone in to ensuring that components are NOT loaded if not needed. Sadly, while WP hooks (actions/filters) are an extremely useful coding tool to enable authors to change and modify behaviour, they rarely pass enough data along to make useful judgements and one quite often has to perform a db read to get te data needed. But 15 sounds far too high.

What about a stripped down version of this forum? Just the basics, to lessen the query loads.

Just a thought, I know most people like all the bells and whistles, but I bet there is a small percentage who wouldn't mind a stripped down version, to lessen query loads.

Its a great forum, don't get me wrong, the best out there I feel. But less query loads would be great. And I know you are busy with this project, so I am just throwing my 2 cents out there.

It's tempting to say that for a stipped down version just go back to version 1, 1.1, 1.2 etc…! That will work!

Having said that I have spent much of the last two weeks stripping the code down and rebuilding with a new query model - especially hitting the areas that get used the most and/or put the most strain on the DB. The good news is that the version I am testing now (a sort of pre-alpha 3.1!) has, on average, reduced the number of queries by about 75% and in some cases more. This is, of course, a huge improvement but it is going to require some solid testing before I can release it. So we reckon about 3-4 weeks.

I don't like putting releases out quite so often but in this case it will be worth it as the benefits are obvious. And all of that without losing any functionality….

Well done swordfish! I can't wait to see it. Anything to cut the number of queries I am a fan of. Thank you so much for this plugin and your continued support of it. Much appreciated!
