WPMU -> Global forum for all users?

Mentioned this to Radio on the WPMU forum, thought I'd bring it here *just in case*.

On my WPMU install, you're only a user if you're a blog admin.  It'll be easy enough to restrict the display of the “Forum” link to logged-in users only through a hack of the theme.

But what I *really* want is to have ONE global forum that's shared by all the users.  It will become my tech support forum, etc.  So I want all 4580 blogs to share one forum.

Can SPF do that?  I installed it a couple of times now, and when I check the users, I'm the only one who shows up.  When I try to add users, the list is empty, so I can't add anybody.

Am I missing something?

Thanks, Andy - appreciate it.

I love the software, and have installed and un-installed it enough I could probably take a shot at writing the install docs for you.  Wink

I just need to figure out this one tweak and I'm golden.

You could send radio a PM and ask him if he can drop by the forum on this topic.

which he did… Thanks…

Given the numbers you cite, and the specifics of the site you mention here, I'm going to assume you are refering to the NationalVirtualMemorial.org site. Is that correct?

Looking at the site and what you want to do with it, it actually sounds like you want SPF 3.1.1 version. The trick is to get all of the users into the the members lists. For this there might be a tweek.

What you need to do is add all of the members to the main blog as subscribers as well. As admin this shouldn't bee too hard, but I don't know any way to do it on mass except for a purpose built sql query.

From there all you should be required to do is hard code the forum URL into the themes you want your users to have access to, so that they all have access to the forums directly.

let me take a look at my setup and I'll post again in a few minutes.

Of all the plugins and hacks that I have on my system, none will let me add users from the existing users table as members of the main blog (which is what you would need)

The only way of doing this, as I see it, is to have the users login to the forum or the main blog with their existing user/pass. WPMU will add the usermeta feild required.

It is an inellegant way to do this, as the first time they visit the forum, SPF will direct them to their profile to change their password. However I do not see an easier method.
